I had quite some trouble getting the game to actually launch at all, so I'm quickly posting this hoping it may help others. I couldn't find this same error on the forums here.

What basically happened is that no matter how I tried to launch Doom 3 BFG; it wouldn't show up at all. No brief window appearing, no error message, just nothing at all.

The eventviewer would give a very non-descriptive message like:

Faulting application name: Doom3BFG.exe, version: 1.0.0.1, time stamp: 0x509d3191
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00000000
Faulting process ID: 0x20d4
Faulting application start time: 0x01d31e7ff48e80a3
Faulting application path: D:\Games\DOOM 3 BFG\Doom3BFG.exe
Faulting module path: unknown
Report ID: 4ce46565-9416-4ecb-a8f6-8e7484bdb3c0
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

The usual stuff like installing/reinstalling software like VC++, DirextX9 etc, trying compatibility mode, different drivers, completely different pc (gave the same error) didn't do anything.

Apparently this error is caused by most (all?) newer nvidia drivers not being able to launch Doom 3 BFG edition in full screen.

You can either create a shortcut or adjust the existing one and add:

"D:\Games\DOOM 3 BFG\Doom3BFG.exe" +set r_fullscreen -1 +set r_windowHeight "2160" +set r_windowWidth "3840" +set r_windowY "0" +set r_windowX "0"

replace the game path and resolution to your own respectively. (don't forget to leave a space behind the close quotation of the actual games .exe)
On the Steam forums for the game there is an alternative solution provided that might help too.

Go to the Doom3BFG.exe, right-click in and go to Properties then to the Compatibility tab. Then check the option to disable display scaling on high DPI settings.
Tried the method above, Still not working. I have an ASUS ROG Strix 6700HQ latptop with an Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb

Thanks a million for this man. I just created a shortcut in my game folder, added that last line on there, and now it works great, straight out of galaxy 2.0
Such a simple fix

Three years later and this worked for me! Thanks.
Many thanks! It's working for me now!

thank you for the tip! I was able to get it to run properly after following your advice!
Some games works only with 1 display, not more
Post edited July 27, 2020 by FulVal
Thanks To DemoniCEVL for the info. It allowed me to quickly get past the openGL error but I will still have to tweak the line parameters to get it to display correctly for me. Right now my laptop must be open so the laptop display is active for it to display correctly on the external monitor.
This lends credence to the BFG edition not liking multiple displays but I don't believe that's acceptable for a 2012 release because by that time multiple displays were very common as well as laptop gaming.
I know the engine is different but I also have the original 2004 release and it runs with no display issues.
Since the latest Nvidia update, whenever I launch the game, the screen turns black, intro screen music runs in the background but the screen remains black. Then I have to start the task manager to kill the game. The game worked just fine 10 days ago, although I was playing doom 1 lvls. Need help, guys.

OK, I fixed it. This helped.

This issue generally occurs if your monitor is set to a non-standard resolution. This can be fixed by launching the game in Windowed Mode, then changing the settings within the game.

To launch Doom 3 BFG Edition in Windowed mode, navigate to:

C:\Users\(username)\Saved Games\id Software\DOOM 3 BFG\base and open the file "D3BFGConfig."

If the file asks which program to open it with, select Choose a program from your computer and use NotePad.

Once the document is open, there will be a long list of commands. Press "Control + F," and search for Fullscreen. This should bring you to the line "set r_fullscreen "1"" Change the 1 to a 0.

Save the document then close it. The next time you launch Doom 3 BFG, it should appear in Windowed Mode. Select Doom 3 from the game selection menu.

Choose Settings, then System, and then click on the word "Disabled" to bring up the selection for your resolution. Choose the proper resolution for your monitor, and you should be good to go!

Worked perfectly! I had to do some tweaking involving "disable fullscreen optimizations" and playing with the dpi settings. I then got it running well enough that I could actually play with the settings in game. then went through and completely got the game running on my ultrawide. Thanks!
This might be very helpful as I have the same problem. However, I don't understand how to create a shortcut or to change the existing one. (The existing one is not the link on the desktop, right?)

Help would be hghly appreciated! Many thanks!
Nice job, for me 10/10. It works gr8. Thank you, I can now play DOOM 3 first time in my live.
