Hi, Peter. Can you confirm whether this worked? I'd very much like to own DOOM on GOG and integrate it into GOG Galaxy using a source port. I didn't think that was possible until I saw your post. Please let me know how it worked out for you, if time tracking works, etc. Thanks!

@JKeift: yes , it is working.. But Dosbox resides in a different directory ("./dosbox/") , so you must copy all .wad files and your Source port files into the dosbox folder, which is a bit annoying, but as the games are quite small, it is ok.
Bett would be you can configure the .exe to start in Galaxy itself..

Best regards,
Peter

philscomputerlab: Also BassMIDI is not a SoundFont, but a virtual MIDI synth, which loads the SoundFonts.
avatar
Ghostbreed: Ah yes. But the author of BASSMIDI also did a Soundfont called something like "Weed".
That was what I was thinking of.
No, no. The WeedsGM3 soundfont is made by Rich Nagel who made a lot of music for various Doom mods back in the day. BASSMIDI is made by Ian Luck. Ian and Rich are friends, which is why Rich's soundfont can be downloaded from Ian's site, but they are definitely not the same person!

Also the BASSMIDI driver which is what most people speak about when they talk about BASSMIDI is made by someone calling himself mudlord and maintained by Chris Moeller, based on Ian Luck's BASSMIDI code.

Ah, understood. :)
the best thing is that all run also under linux.

thank you for this nice guide ! <3
Thanks for the awesome guide!
I suggest that the source port PrBoom-plus be added in OP. Latest version 2.5.1.4 was released a few weeks go, and its a popular engine among demo recorders.
FYI GZDoom has an actual website front page again for news updates and all: http://gzdoom.drdteam.org/

Something else worth mentioning in the OP is the most widely used port for multiplayer right now, Zandronum. Installer comes with Doomseeker which is basically your server browser for it: https://zandronum.com/

Some also use ZDaemon or Odamex for one reason or another. ZDaemon is used for something more "oldschool" though it's still based on ZDoom (but strangely, is the only one to not be usable in Doomseeker though it has it's own server browser). They all have their own communities.

Wonderful guide.

Thanks to Phil and everyone else who contributed.
Wanted to add some stuff about multiplayer. Usually big weekly things go like this.

Thursday Night Survival: ZDaemon, has Euro and US sessions.
Friday Night Fragfest: Zandronum, there's an Euro and US version.
ZDaemon Sessions: Usually Saturday.

You'll have to look these up for times each week, usually news ends up on Doomworld one way or another but you can also check each sourceport's forum. One thing to note here is that Zandronum is multiplatform while ZDaemon isn't quite as much (however there is much reported success with Wine. I know Oblige works with no modifications in Wine, so this shouldn't be too bad).

For anyone buying the classic Doom games on GOG, and now Doom 3: BFG Edition, and using the GZDoom source port or similar source ports, check out JP LeBreton's WadSmoosh tool. It lets you take all the wads of the classic Doom games (The Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, the Master Levels) and even the No Rest for the Living Expansion from Doom 3: BFG Edition and combine them all to a progressive single-player experience. Even if you are lacking certain *wad files (e.g. you have The Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and No Rest for the Living *wad files but not the other ones), you can still combine what you have into a single file.

Note for OSX users: if you're left wondering how to work this thing, skip the thing about the .sh file. There's a quicker method as you'll need Python anyway. Install the latest version of Python 2 (google it), then run Wadsmoosh.py in Python Launcher. The rest is done for you in the terminal, don't worry about all those screens that pop up. It'll say when it's done.

EDIT: Also, if you put this in the same place as your Doom/Doom 2 WADs for GZDoom, it'll auto-recognize it just like the rest. Nifty!

For anyone looking use GZDoom but wanting to old-school look and feel with the low-detail graphics mode, you're in luck since the community has created a nifty little PWAD called RetroShader, which lets you play the classic Doom games as if they were played in a lower resolution mode without actually having to lowering the display resolution on the source port itself. The link below contains the latest version updated to work with GZDoom v3.2.0. and QZDoom v2.0.1., older builds of these ports will not work. Simply run this with your game (drag-and-drop, autorun it through config.ini, load through command line parameter, etc.) and behold G/QZDoom in all of its vintage glory. The original link to the mod by torridgristle can be found here; download the updated version by Rachel Alexanderson in Page 2.

Speaking of GZDoom, this is a really late news and all but some of the ZDoom and variants' are now finally hosted in a single website by the dev team under the newly redesigned ZDoom website where you can find the latest news and updates of ZDoom or similar ports, as well as the latest official downloads to ZDoom (discontinued), GZDoom (active), and QZDoom (experimental).

Another thing I forgot to mention about WadSmoosh is that it only works on GZDoom (or QZDoom); it does not support old ZDoom.
