Doom Tweak Guide

In this video I am showing you how to tweak the GOG.com release of Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom.

This is a great release, with GOG providing the latest versions and included all SETUP files.

These old games can be played in DOSBox for an authentic experience or through a source engine offering widescreen resolutions, better graphics and surround sound.

I am showing you how to tweak both, and also how to use General MIDI SoundFont with these games.

What do I prefer?

Definitely with a Source Port! There are many, but so far I really like ZDoom. It even has 5.1 surround sound.

Your link to GZDoom is very out of date. That old site isn't updated any longer which is why it only has version 1.8.02. A lot of the newer ZDoom features are present in the latest builds of GZDoom. The latest versions are 1.8.10 and 2.0.05 (but the v2 versions need a newer OpenGL version than the old v1, but it shouldn't be an issue for most machines).

You are probably better off with the latest Dev builds of GZDoom, though. They can be found here:
http://devbuilds.drdteam.org/gzdoom/

The Dev builds are much more up to date with bug fixes and such.

I highly recommend using a soundfont. It transforms MIDI game music into something wonderful.

Here's d_runnin.mid (Doom 2 level 1) ran through two soundfonts I've used in the past:

Had the twi SoundFonts you mention, plus a lot more.

Also BassMIDI is not a SoundFont, but a virtual MIDI synth, which loads the SoundFonts.

Ah yes. But the author of BASSMIDI also did a Soundfont called something like "Weed".
That was what I was thinking of.

Ah, you mean Weeds General MIDI SoundFont v3.0?

I really like that SoundFont. But in the end of the day, it's a very personal choice, and some SoundFonts are stronger in certain games. I really like the Arachno SoundFont in Doom for example.

The good news is: There are lots of choices! :)

Mind if I contribute this for ZDoom (or similar) users? A collection of widescreen HUDs by NightFright for Doom and id Tech 1-based games and mods.

Important note: These HUD mods does not work properly on Zandronum. I've tried using the Doom widescreen HUD with Zandronum and the HUD got distorted and mixed up.

That's the one. :) I once tried out a very cool soundfont that reminded me alot of the 8-bit Nintendo music.
Too bad it lacked any kind of drums.

I would like to also suggest smooth doom by Gifty: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=45550 improves the games animations, you have to use ZDoom or its many derivatives for it.

Is there a way to integrate the Source Ports into GOG Galaxy, so that launching the game starts the Source Port and records time?

for example:
If I just rename GZDoom.exe to Doom.exe, the game does not start from GOG Galaxy..

doom.exe runs within DOSBox. I don't think that GZDoom would run in DOSBox. Try renaming GZDoom.exe to dosbox.exe and see if that works.
