I tried to launch Doom 2016, installed using the offline game installer, and all I got was a black screen. No sound. Nothing.
After quite a bit of fiddling and Web searching, I found a fix on a site that's new to me (https://clawsomegamer.com/doom-2016-crash-at-startup-pc-fix). As the writer says: "PC users report that installing Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Update 3 RC fixes the crash at startup issue with the game."
So I clicked the link they provide (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52685), installed vc_redist.x64.exe and bingo. The game started. I've played for an hour and all is well so far.
I hope this helps someone else.
