I "accidentally" picked up this game during the Insomnia Sale when I forgot to flag the purchase as a Gift. Best mistake I have made in a LONG time! Loving this game!

It is what I envision would happen if Tim Burton had created Animal Crossing.

Can't get enough!

Any tips for a (slightly advanced) noob?
I also picked this up during the Insomnia sale, and instead of losing sleep to the sale, I started losing sleep to "Don't Starve" :)

There's a lot of things I've figured out in the short time I've played it. Most of it you can figure out just by playing long enough. Basic things to worry about: 1) not starving until you get basic camp started. 2) surviving hound attacks. 3) staying warm in winter.

And what I find is that the first (or second or third) approach to solve a problem can be improved on as you work it out.

I can be more specific, but part of at least the initial few sessions is finding stuff out.

Eventually, you need a secure source of food, a secure source of defense (and offense isn't necessarily the best defense), and the ability to go out and explore more of the world.
When you make a base camp, aim to make a long but narrow entrance passage and fill it with spike traps. That way many nasties will die or be injured trying to get in.

Another tip is to hide in the beefalo if the hounds come after you.
I also picked up this game, and I was surprised at how fun it is!

I'm insistent not to look anything up, though. It's been a while since I've played a game that doesn't hold your hand through stuff, so I'm loving it :D

I found an entire village of pigs. I just run there when the hounds attack and the pigs do the rest.

:-D
Game is unbelievable for $4.99. I'm so glad I picked it up. First single player game I've really enjoyed in a LONG time.
I've been hopelessly addicted to it for days. I can see Don't Starve being one of those games I play in stretches for years and years to come, especially if they keep releasing new content. What a game.
I've been playing it for a while and I'm surprised about posts above - it seems to be very complex game.

I'm just a little disappointed - is there no tutorial for beginners? And no selective save game system?

I mean I died few times after few days and after that the only possibility is to star over again? That does not encourage me.
No hand holding and saving is part of its charm. 99% of the time I prefer tutorials and freeze / quick / state saves but once in a while it's fun with a game like this.

Before you start you can change so that it's less harsch weather, more resources, less enemies I think and that kind of stuff to get you going. There are tons of information on the and there are couple of [url=http://steamcommunity.com/app/219740/guides]guides at Steam Discussions.

I would advise you try without any of that on your first few tries though.
There are at least two ways where you can "resurrect" in the game if you are killed. One is a craftable item. The other is a non-unique building in the game.

Thx for advice. I'll try not to die then :P
I picked it up during the sale as well. I had been waiting for GOG to have it on sale again. I'm really enjoying it. So far my second attempt was my best, 35 days I think. Tries 3-5 have not been near as good (both 4&5 less than a week) becuase I've been too brave with spiders and frogs.
