Will Don't Starve Together be a free addon once it is released? It will be for owners on Steam, will it be free on gog as well?
I was wondering that myself, so I had a look over at Klei's forums. The answer is... interesting, and the short answer is they're not sure.

Quoting JoeW:
"Right now, DST is entirely dependent on Steam. It's not outside of the realm of possibility of course, but it's really going to depend on too many factors for us to say anything outside of what we have said in the roadmap.

We totally understand the interest, so it will always be on our radar until we can have a more definitive answer one way or the other."

And the roadmap has two relevant sections:
"I do not own Don’t Starve on Steam. How does the Frontier pack work for me?
If you do not own Don’t Starve on Steam, the Frontier pack is $19.99 and includes 1 copy of Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together for yourself and a copy of Don’t Starve Together for a friend. The friend copy of Don’t Starve Together comes as a tradeable item in your Steam Inventory. If you purchased the game on gog.com, contact support and we will help you out.

Is Don't Starve Together available to non-Steam users?
Don't Starve Together uses a lot of the Steam API's to function, hence, at this time, Don't Starve Together is only available on Steam."

I haven't tried contacting their support yet, so I don't know exactly how that will work out.

And this is part of why Steam is a bad, baaaaad thing...
I really hope that GOG-Galaxy will free us from the sharp claws of Steam for online games...
That is absolute unfair!!!!
GoG should give us their own GoG client (and servers) for multiplayer, achievments and mod support - DRM Free. I would never buy a game on Steam again.
Yeah I swore off Steam when I went to give a game to a friend and discovered you could no longer do that, even though you could when I bought said game. I even eventually actually bothered to uninstall the crap pile when the linux client "rm -rf /" scandal broke. A DRM free online play platform will certainly be welcome.
I swear I read a few months ago that it would be a free upgrade for non-Steam owners.

This pisses me off, as I've passed up probably 4 Steam sales for Don't Starve, and even had a friend give their gift copy to someone else since I already had the GOG copy!

Well congratulations, devs, you've undoubtedly pissed off a bunch of your fans.

I take that as good news but maybe I misunderstood it?

The only thing it means is they will give you a key for DST (and DS too I think). Also their boss said recently that you can use standalone key on Steam, I'm not sure wether it's true or not. Wether that's good news or not... I'm not going to comment.

Last thing I heard from one of the devs is that they will still look into making it standalone, but it's not on their priority list since they're busy with DST development itself. Their PRs are way more dismissive tho, so I wouldn't keep my hopes high.
I can confirm that if you own Don't Starve on gog, Klei entertainment will give you a Don't Starve steam key, after verifying your gog Don't Starve key.

I recently emailed them, in reference to Don't Starve Together, asking about owning Don't Starve on gog and how it would affect my ability to play Don't Starve Together. They were polite and said their solution at the moment is to give out steam keys, and they asked for my gog key. They verified my gog key and gave me a Don't Starve steam key.

So if you want to be sure you get Don't Starve Together for free, you probably need to email Klei entertainment on their official site and get your steam key before June 3rd. (DST goes live June 3rd, Free to current Don't Starve owners on steam)

Hopefully this information is helpful.

Thanks for mentioning this, I sent an e-mail right away.

I hope they can integrate Together with Galaxy later on because that would be a great way for GOG to show off their supposed cross-platform support.
How long did it take for Klei support to get back to any of you with your Steam key? They requested my GoG key to verify my purchase and I have not heard back since I provided my key on Sunday.

Here’s the link for anyone that wants to contact them for a key.
