I only have one controller or I'd give it a shot.
Indeed, i asked the devs on Steam for advice and got this reply:
To do a split screen local game you must use 2 controllers, and 1 different profile for each controller. You can create 2 new profiles if you want or old ones, it doesn't matter but remember that the save file will be made on the profile hosting the game. So you just start the game with 2 controllers plugged in and assign a profile for each (you assign the second controller by pressing the Menu button on it to activate it and choose a profile). You can then go to character creation by hosting an online game with controller 1 and launching.
