I have a new laptop with Windows 8 (geforce 450m with 2gb).

Installation went smoothly. However the opening intro sequence dragged a bit - as well as sound - and after that you could still start playing...but it was then very jerky (cursor dragged and jumped very badly and made playing actually impossible).

I tried to run (as suggested by google helps) the game in other compatibility modes...(xp / win 98)....this helped in intro sequence which now went smoother...

...but actual gaming no: still could not utilize jerky cursor which lived its own life...

Any tips / official help? Other configuration issues which might help?

open the game configuration (configeditor.exe is located in your disciples 2 folder) and try checking "Use Direct 3D" and/or "Compatibility Mode"

...too bad it did not work. I tried every possible (reasonable) combination between different compatibility modes, D3D off/on and more narrow configuration parameters...

Thanks anyway,

I had the same problem as you in Win8.
First I set configeditor.exe and discipl2.exe files in both catalogues Dark Prophecy/ and Rise of Elves/ to run as administrator. Then changed both config files to use resolution1024x768 and thick "Use Direct3D", "Strech to full", "Compability mode". Unthick "Play intro when game starts".
Worked like a charm. Plays great.

Thanks a lot!. Looks like above settings did work!

Hello all.

Just wanted to let you know that sapphire81's solution worked for me as well. And I did not need to unthick "Play intro when game starts."

You should run the config files as administrator by right clicking -> Properties -> Compatibility -> thick "Run this program as administrator". Just to be cautious.

This directly solves the Windows 8 compatibility issue as far as I've tested. sapphire81's post should be marked as solution and this thread should be stickied as well. I sent an e-mail to the support team for them to update the installer or just publish a patch to make these changes so the game is completely playable under Windows 8. (Although there seems to be other initialization problems and such in other threads)

Thanks.

ty for information. now it's work verry nice
Tried the settings that sapphire81 posted but now I'm getting the infamous "Can't Initialize Disciples II." error. Any solutions? Was hoping this might fix the same jerkyness that MBDunc was experiencing for windows 8.
Sapphire81's solution did not work for me, the game is still jerky. :/
Ok, update! I went into the configeditor, changed the resolution from 1024x768 to 800x600 and it worked. The game is running smooth, even the intro ran perfectly, at a lower resolution, but I don't mind. Thanks for the solution.
