Well, this is weird. Selecting to mark as question didn't result in anything at all, trying without that selected results in a topic but no post. So here's the post, if it'll work this way:

Just installed Disciples Sacred Lands today and at first it started just fine. GOGLauncher.exe called rundll32.exe, which I know is a method that can lead to issues, and rundll32.exe tried to connect somewhere (huh?), which connection I blocked, which led to a brief delay, but then it all went just fine. And that worked a few times, as I was just playing a little, quitting, getting back a little later. However, after finishing the first scenario in the saga and playing a few turns of the second, quitting and trying to get back again a bit later, it didn't start anymore and my desktop and taskbar (so essentially explorer.exe) became unresponsive. Otherwise everything worked, so started task manager, closed GOGLauncher.exe and rundll32.exe, but nothing changed. Closed and restarted explorer.exe, notification icons were rather messy. So logged off and back on (no reboot), saw a bunch of odd notifications and errors in system logs but it all seemed fine in practice, so tried again, with the same result, and the same solution. Didn't try again since (you know, not meaning to prove that definition of insanity even more... though, then again, I did the same thing and DID get different results initially, when it stopped working).

Win 7 32-bit, and I do see that Win 7 is not listed as supported, why I put off getting it all this time, but also saw people playing it on Win 7 all along and complaining of some freezes or crashes if you let the game idle while playing, so resolved not to do that and give it a go, and there were no freezes and crashes while playing, for however long I did. But then I didn't even get that far anymore, and not seeing this particular issue reported here.
So any idea what this is all about and how to sort it out?
Not sure if you're still trying to get this working, but I'm running Windows 10 and simply settint compatibility mode to XP SP2 was enough to get it running- though oddly enough, it "crashes" when I quit.

(Sorry, didn't notice the reply so far.)
I got it to work by no longer using GOG's EXE, as in switch off DirectDraw and DirectPlay, select Win 98/ME and all checkboxes bar 256 colors as compatibility options for the game's actual EXE and then run that. Not sure if all of that's needed, but wanted to be on the safe side.
