I'm interested in this game but would first like to know if LAN works, and are there any hoops to jump through to get it to work.
I personally did not try, but assuming you can freely open ports and communicate between the computer of your Lan, there is no reason why the "direct connect" function should not work.
I've played over a couple different VPNs before so I'd assume that LAN works.
Thanks!
Does this game have any extra hoops to jump through to play multiplayer? Like requesting a unique code from GOG or something?

I don't know about LAN, but I believe playing over the Internet requires the serial code which appears in the game's entry in your library.
I play with an emulated LAN network and already tried with local cable. Both worked quite well. It's easy to join over ip and there is no issue at all.
I finally got the game and tested it over a local LAN between two computers.
It worked great, I didn't play any, just connected and moved around to make sure it worked.
Didn't even have to jump through a single hoop, that's rare these days. :)

That's cool and should I assume that means you didn't have to use a key then?
I didn't need a key for LAN.
The license for the game actually says it can be installed on multiple computers in the same household, so I think the developer is going for the "multiplayer spawn" thing we used to see in the old days.
