In the For What It's Worth Dept., I purchased four games from GOG.com yesterday, and had no problems installing them, except for Die by the Sword. DbtS initially gave the following error message on installation:
We are sorry, installation failed...
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Die by the Sword\Die by the Sword\data\FEM_HERO.ATD
MoveFile failed, code 5
Access is denied
The install target was as follows:
Soyo SY-7VBA133U Motherboard
Intel 866 MHz Pentium III CPU (OEM)
PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 AGP 8x 256 MB DDR
Model No.: VCGFX522APB
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 PCI Sound Card
Model No.: SB0060US(Box)/SB0220(Card)
D-Link Fast Ethernet 10/100 Mbps Network Adapter DFE-530TX+ Rev. E1
Toshiba Samsung CD-Master 52E CD-ROM Drive
Model No.: SH-152AEBUW
Samsung CD-RW/DVD Drive
Model: TS-H492A/RSWN
512 MB 133 MHz SDRAM
Adaptec Duo Connect USB 2.0/Firewire PCI Adapter
Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.1325 (updated as of 7 Sept. 2009)
I initially downloaded (with Firefox 3), installed, and executed FreeSpace 2 with no problems as a regular user (not as administrator). I then downloaded the other three games, and attempted to install Die by the Sword next (as a regular user) and got the error message given above. I then tried the following:
1. Downloaded the Die by the Sword application again (with Firefox 3) and tried to install again as a regular user, not as administrator. Interestingly, I got the same error message, but for a different file (THE_HERO.ATD):
We are sorry, installation failed...
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Die by the Sword\Die by the Sword\data\THE_HERO.ATD
MoveFile failed, code 5
Access is denied
2. Tried to run the DbtS installer as administrator, and this produced the same error given above in item 1.
2. Successfully installed and executed Earthworm Jim 1 & 2: The Whole Can of Worms and Fallout Tactics with no errors as a regular user, not as administrator.
3. Ran a low level scan of the C: drive which produced no errors.
4. Ran a complete virus scan of the C: drive with Kaspersky Internet Security 7 with no errors.
5. Paused protection in Kaspersky Internet Security 7, and attempted to install the DbtS again as a regular user, not as administrator. This time the installation succeeded.
Hopefully, this will help somebody else down the road.
Yeah, a common thing about the GOG versions of games is that anti-virus programs get a false positive about them and stop them from installing. Weird, but it happens.
