I've been trying to play multiplayer with a friend, both using Hamachi as well as using an ordinary internet IP to connect. The game seems to work fine for the person hosting, and the person connecting can get to the screen where the name of the game is viewable.
As soon as the connecting person click to join, the cursor disappears and the game freezes. The only way to get out of the game is to hit ctrl-alt-delete.
Has anyone had similar issues, or does anyone know a workaround? I'm using Vista x64 and he's on Vista x86.
Thanks!

How long did you wait before you killed the game's process? Some old games, DBTS included, tend to seemingly lock up when looking for a server or connecting to it, because they don't bother updating the screen (mouse position etc) while doing this.
Yep, I had the same problem on Die By The Sword Hamachi group.
However, when I tested it with 2 of my own PCs (each with independent external IPs) via Hamachi, it worked fine.
Will investigate further.
I successfully played a DTBS:LFL multiplayer game over Hamachi.

It works. Just make sure you can ping your friends first. If everyone can ping each other via Hamachi, then the game will work. Also one comment: THE SERVER MUST BE THE FIRST TO START (ENTER ARENA) GAME. EVERYONE ELSE AFTER.

Nice. Was it with nearby friends, or overseas? Is it laggy when you play?
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The clients have to keep on retrying (searching) for the server.
It was within the same country. It was okay speed. No laggy. Remember, Hamachi Free gives you capped bandwidth.
If you got any problems, also try another tip: disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for MS DirectPlay Helper (dplaysvr.exe).
Also, since Die By The Sword uses DirectPlay as its network protocol/infrastracture... I think it's possible for Game Browser Clients (eg. GameSpy 3D/Arcade, Kali, GameRanger, PhoeniXWorX, eWarZone, IGZones, etc.) to support Die By The Sword and it would be faster than Hamachi because of the DirectPlay-tunneling attention (Hamachi is a general VPN).
http://www.kali.net/bbs/ (I think their forums dead but give a try)
http://www.gameranger.com/ (need their client to access forums)
http://community.phoenixworx.org/forums/ (still alive)
http://forums.gamespy.com/gamespyarcade/ (kinda still alive)
http://www.ewarzone.com/forums/ (still alive)
It's just a case of posting a game support request to their forums. GameRanger is one of the programs that doesn't require portforwarding (like Hamachi doesn't). Don't know the details of the rest.

I can't imagine how the game would turn out if I were to play against you lol. Can't picture how 1998 Internet technology would attempt to handle massive packet loss and long range data transfer.
I really wish Treyarch would stop creating mediocre FPSes and actually try to make a sequel to DBTS, because if there's a game that deserves a sequel, it'd be DBTS
That's what I said in the callofduty.com forums.. TreyArch should go back creating fantastic unique games like DTBS and not cash in the Call of Duty franchise FPS genre just for money.... while killing off their pastime fanbase.
Anyway, I hoped DTBS would install registry keys in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications
upon installation, but it didn't. So it's not a true DirectPlay lobby game. eWarZone.com client supports DirectPlay 7 (& old) lobby games and uses the list in registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications
to let you host/join lobby games (from that list). eg. Take No Prisoners, and many more classics.
Please note: you do not need Hamachi to play over the internet (assuming you can port forward 4 ports).
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_by_the_Sword#Multiplayer_Compatibility for the port numbers to forward.
Only the server needs to port forward (assuming not using Hamachi), clients don't need to port forward. Playing without Hamachi should be generally faster since there's no VPN overhead.
Also, Limb From Limb installation seems to improve gameplay lag issues. It was very laggy with original DBTS.

Then I shall challenge you to a duel.

I forgot the pings from the other peeps over Hamachi but it was fine. Not noticable lag.
