Looks like the problem I have on my modern PC with Direct3D acceleration-that is, before the game crashes later on in the tutorial..
I don't know if the problem is Vista or NVIDIA's drivers in my case, but given the latter's track record with older games (like Crimson Skies and garbled text), that's what I'm going to blame.
Are you using an NVIDIA card as well?

Yup, 8800gtx. im more than half tempted to try and find an older computer.
Does this also happen when you run the game in software mode?
I finally got rid of the massive colouring issues with pink everywhere only to get into the game and have this happen. Still no response off gog support :(
I have tried running it in several different modes and this is as far as I have gotten.
I'm running Windows 7100 RC and have DX11 apparently. Running in compatability but all to no avail. I'm super annoyed mainly because I couldn't play the game when it first came out all those years ago because my PC was a pile of *ahem* yeah so maybe I'm just destined to never play this.
Did the OP every get it working? Care to enlighten me if you did.

Hi Centy. Windows 7 is still in beta. Try running it on Vista and see if it improves. I ran DBTS on a W7 system and had all the discoloration issues. Put the game on a Vista computer and they went away. I think a lot of the discoloration problems come from running an old game on new software that hasn't been released in a finished state...Just my 2 cents of course.

Yeah I know Win7 is still beta but I've not had any issues with any other gog games or other games for that matter. Alas I don't have any other machines to test on so I will likely have to wait on getting a shot of my sisters laptop but that will only confirm if it works I wont be able to actually sit and play it.
I hope that GOG is working on making sure things run with Win7 as I suspect that it will get alot of XP people to switch I mean it got me and I have always been against Vista.
This may sound like shameless self-advertisement, but it will most likely fix your problems:
Try Die by the Sword - Xtended. It fixes several game issues and adds a new Direct3D9 graphics engine that should fix those discoloration problems (and allows high resolutions and antialiasing and stuff). Make sure to update your DirectX!

That worked perfect sir you are a legend! Anyone else getting the black trails of blindness should try this mod out. The higher resolutions and easy windowed mode also help if you have dual monitors and don't want everything pushed off.
