Anyone had the following issue?

Started fine, have been running the game for nearly a month now. About a week ago it would occasionally crash during start up. Easy fix, just restart and it was fine. Then a few days later it would crash two or three times. Then the following day five. Now I can't actually initiate a game at all!

Have tried the repair option. Something was downloaded but no difference.

Found an articale about running in some mode that prevents issues and made sure that was off as instructed. No dice.

Any ideas? If I want to back up my characters and try reinstalling does anyone know if that can be done on the GOG install?

For the GOG version the save games are located under the dx folder in the installation (next to the exe).

If you are not playing via Battle.net you might want to try DevilutionX as it has less issues with modern operating systems.
Use diablo saver to back up your characters and try a fresh install. A safe download link and how to guide can be found here:

Many players do not consider Dsaver to be legit. I do not mind personally but if you would rather not use third party applications you can copy these files and then paste them into the Diablo folder once you have completed a clean install.

"multi_0.sv" - "multi_9.sv"

you can have up to 10 characters and backing up those files will copy your old characters to your new Diablo install.
