Just a quick post for anyone trying to play this on Wine:

The game works flawlessly BUT!

The menu won't render at all. You may have a few seconds of it being visible when you minimize/maximize it. As soon as it fills the screen it goes black and you won't see anything. It is running tho.

You can use this trick, or muscle memory to click "single player", type your profile name and start game, but this is hard.

If you manage to start in such horrible conditions the game, it will play perfectly as soon as it loads the map. Even with music!

Try the Linux and Mac port of Devilution, it doesn't have the menu issue and should generally work better:

(There's a PR for FreeBSD support, so should be easy to get running there as well)

Just wanted to pipe in and say that this port is awesome. You can compile or download a binary. I had to do a little tweaking, but the end result is top notch.

Bravo, Anders!

I found a Wine hack online that lets you see the menus. It's not perfect, but it at least gets you into the game. I'll post a little later when I'm home from work.

Just a reminder to post the Wine hack :)

Also, does anyone know of a guide that will help me install GOG Diablo on a Mac via Wine?
no visible menu in wine is an old issue... there used to be a wine patch (for a just as old wine version) to make it work

if by click you mean literally ... the mouse ... uhm, you can use the keyboard arrow keys and enter key to navigate the menu. I think escape key to go one level up in the menu.

so you only need to know the menu structure, not muscle memory

Actually I tried recently installing Lutris. There is a script there for this version of Diablo.

It installs a patched wine and using it I can see the menu. It won't animate or refresh, but is good enough to knok where is the cursor.

Most games have new game as the first option, and quit as last. Usually you can access the last option by pressing the up arrow from the beggining of the menu. Diablo asks the class, and then the name, so it is easy to remember: Enter, Enter, type a name and enter (unless you don't want a warrior class)

You can follow this guide to unpack the GOG installer

I used to play the Diablo disc on Linux 4-7 years ago. The thing that made it work was called ddraw_hack.
