Hello,

I don't know how to play with the Barbarian in Hellfire. There's a ton of information on how to do it with old Diablo + Hellfire, but I want to know how to do it "right" with the new GOG Hellfire.

Thank you for your time.

edit: solved thanks to Swedrami. You have to open the Hellfire folder, typical install will be his one:

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Diablo\hellfire

There you must create a "command.txt" where you write:

cowquest;theoquest;bardtest;multitest;barbariantest;

You should be able to create a Barbarian now.

Warning!! Create the file inside the hellfire folder, if you create it inside the Diablo folder it won't work.

As far as I know there's only one way to do it and that's documented here, for example:

"Command.txt is a text file placed in the Hellfire directory that enables the hidden characters, quests, and multiplayer mode in Hellfire v1.01. A few steps are required to enable it, and the other secret features in Hellfire.

Unlocking the Undocumented Features

You must have hellfire installed on your machine before any of the following will do you any good. We do not have information about where you can obtain Hellfire. Neither Sierra nor Blizzard sell it through their online store, it is not part of the Diablo Battlechest, and few stores will have the game in stock at this time. You can find used copies through Amazon.com and other game retailers, but they are usually expensive. Checking ebay.com might be your best bet, or finding someone to borrow it from. You do not need the Hellfire CD to run the game, once it's installed.

1. Download this file (640k, zip) hosted by the Unofficial Diablo Site. It contains:
- Sierra's official Hellfire v1.01 patch (also can be downloaded directly from the Sierra site).
- The hacked hellfrui.dll you need to enable multiplayer in Hellfire v1.01.
- The command.txt file.

2. Open the zip and run hf101.exe to upgrade to the Hellfire v1.01 patch.
3. Extract hellfrui.dll and command.txt to your hellfire folder (C:/sierra/hellfire by default). Hellfrui.dll will overwrite the original version (this is what enables multiplayer).
4. That's it. The Bard, Barbarian, the Theo quest, Cow quest, and multiplayer are now enabled.

Command.txt Editing

If you wish to disable any of the features enabled by the command.txt, simply delete the mention of that item in the code. For instance, if you wanted to not include the silly cow suit quest, just remove that portion from the code, turning this:

cowquest;theoquest;bardtest;multitest;barbariantest;

into this:

theoquest;bardtest;multitest;barbariantest

Be sure you don't change the spacing or leave an extra semicolon. These values are checked when the program initiates, so if you wish to change something, you'll have to exit Hellfire, save the change, and then restart."
Thank you for your answer. Yes, that's one of many resources I found, but it requires to download a file and the link is broken. If I could find another way to download the file, it also requires upgrading to 1.01, but GOG's Hellfire version is already 1.01. So I would like to know what is the best way with GOG version.

Thank you for your time.
If it's just about the character classes (Bard & Barbarian) I think you can safely skip to the step where you place that command.txt, containing the above mentioned string in the Hellfire folder.

In your case:

bardtest;barbariantest

Not sure about the closing semicolon. If the above string doesn't work, you likely have to add another semicolon at the end of barbariantest.

Just to clarify those command.txt lines for Hellfire a little, cause you might not want them all:

multitest = enables multiplayer in Hellfire 1.00 (and you want to play 1.01 anyway and GOG Multiplayer/Battle.net/whatever works different anyway)

barbariantest = adds the barbarian class (but only if you play in 1.01)

bardtest = adds the bard class

nestart = activates a specific nestlayout with other colour palette (which looks worse and disables random nest levels)

cryptart = same with the crypt

cowquest = adds a quest to get a Cow Armour (but you won't get the "Auric Amulet" on the other hand. It enables you to hold more gold)

theoquest = adds a quest to find a teddy in exchange for an amulet (if you don't have to quest, the named mob will just drop the amulet)

So consider what you really want...personally I only add the two extra classes.
Thank you! It works. I edit the first post to show how to do it.

Thanks, I'll do the same and add only the classes. :P

The link to the patch is broken.
Luckily we can still use the create your own textile method, and but still, you should have checked to see if the link still works before posting it.

Just tried it, works fine with my GOG version of Diablo.
Some confusion about how to format the command in the txt file:Someone in another thread said spaces instead of semicolons to seperate the commands;one person said that worked great, did not work at all for another person.
I went with tthe semicolons;worked great.
For anyone who is interested in playing multiplayer in Hellfire 1.01, I found an old website that hosts the hacked hellfrui.dll file, since the link on the Diablo fandom wiki no longer works (it's under the section "Hellfire Downloads"):

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~spaz/downloads.htm

It enables multiplayer in the options menu, but I have not tested multiplayer myself to see how it functions.

Just wanted to inform that i downloaded this and copy-pasted the file into GoG hellfire and said YES to replace old file. (I ofcourse kept a backup.)

Then i went in the command.txt and added this.

cowquest;theoquest;bardtest;barbariantest;nestart;cryptart;multitest;

and now it all works! With multiplayer as well and all, but i noticed some errors when trying to create a character in "Multiplayer" and i solved that by running the game in "administrator mode" and now i can finally create and play characters in Multiplayer :)

All i need now is to test it out with a friend to see if it is actually working, but at least its possible to play in multiplayer with a character now!
I did what you did, but cannot create characters in multiplayer mode. I tried "administrator mode" but that still didn't work.

This worked for me but I can't enable jogging in town in multiplayer.
Edit: Which is apparently a single-player only option. :(

Is the .dll only for unlocking multiplayer? Because the GOG version of Hellfire is already at 1.01 but for me the command.txt does absolutely bupkis
And to clarify, I don’t care for multiplayer, i just want to play the damn bard

Try run hellfire.exe as adminnistrator. It worked for me.
