So I have been playing Hellfire for about 1-3 weeks with no issues, and using an item editor+trainer to import the items. Out of nowhere, the game crashes mid-game, and now whenever I try to play, as soon as I click "Start Game" the game crashes to desktop.

Diablo 1 runs perfectly with no issues, while Hellfire crashes when clicking Start Game. This is unaffected by every possible combination of video settings, and even after reinstalling diablo+hellfire and deleting all characters, it still crashed on "Start Game" every time.

Interestingly enough, it also creates a "Hellfire.ERR" file that overwrites the old one, and opening it with Notepad++ revealed the following:

Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION
Fault address: 004270C4 01:000260C4 D:\gog games\Diablo\hellfire\hellfire.exe

I'm not sure if anyone can make sense of this, but I couldn't find anyone else online with their game crashing in the same place.
