I just picked up Arkaines Valor after doing the Chamber of Bone in Hellfire and saved the game. Whenever I start a new game, my armor turns into a minor healing potion that reads Butcher's Cleaver and my sorceror becomes naked. Does anyone know about this and is there a workaround to this?

All unique items in Diablo and Hellfire including the Auric Amulet in Hellfire are subject to occasionally morphing into some worthless item. This bug has existed since the beginning.

It is possible to check if an item will morph by saving, starting a new game with the item in your inventory and checking to see if it has changed. If it does there's nothing to be done, just reload your saved game and sell the item before starting another game. If it didn't morph (in my experience) it never will, although should you get that item again later it is entirely possible that it will morph.

Some unique items seem particularly prone to morphing such as the unique Great Sword Shirotachi which I've never been able to take to a new game without it morphing.

A workaround is to use Utmo's Stash (see the thread by that name in this forum). Items in the stash are not effected by starting a new game. This also allows the effect of Shrines/Oils that increase damage, accuracy or armor class to persist.
Just for the sake of clarity and completeness. This is a hellfire only glitch, I don't believe I have ever seen this in vanilla.
the mechanic isnt a bug, in diablo 1 to prevent cheating, every new game transforms all unique items into full stacks of money, but hellfire broke that and they transform into shit items
Thanks guys, was wondering about that. Guess I'm going armor shopping. When I previously actually played 1.09D Diablo I never noticed this at all.

I think that's the way it is supposed to work on PlayStation, but I never had that happen on the PC version of Diablo.

Do you have a citation for that claim? The game is known to take some shortcuts for storing all items - mundane, magical, and unique, but this is the first I've ever heard someone claim that morphing unique items was done for anti-cheat purposes. If that's what it was, it was not very well done, since the item morph/regeneration logic could easily have prevented one well known cheat (excessive spell charges on staves), and did not. Further, why would the developers go to the trouble to force select single player items to morph, instead of just stripping them entirely or forbidding reusing a character in a new game? If the goal was to prevent cheating, they put in excessive effort and got a fairly limited return on it. I think it more likely that they were trying to achieve some other goal, such as very minimal space usage, and failed to adequately handle some edge cases.
