Isn't there a fan made version of Hellfire you can download online somewhere? If so, where? And what other mods are good and where to get them?
Belzebub, The Hell, Infernity, and so forth.

Try this mod manager:

Doesn't Hell have everything Hellfire had and more?
If you want a more vanilla game with quality of life features like enemy health bars, highlight items, and stash then try Diablo Torch. You can find it in the download section on freshmeat-blog. It works for both single player, and lan/multiplayer. For me the Win 8.1 & 10 version worked, but you may need to use to the other version base on what Win OS you are using.

Installation is simple just extract, and drop the files into the main Diablo directory. It works for both classic, and patched version. It also doesn't need to be installed in the dx folder. Just make sure to create a shortcut to the inject.bat file on the desktop after you installed it. Then run the game, and create/load a character, or start a lan/multiplayer game. Once you are in town press Ctrl+Alt+Tab so you can tab out of the game, and then run the inject.bat shortcut. Note normal Alt+Tab doesn't work thus the reason to use the other method. After that tab back into the game and you should see the new features. If you don't see the new on screen features quit the game, and install one of the other version of the mod provided in the compressed file.

I tried this to install this but when I try to run the BAT file it says it "Failed to create thread in Diablo process!".

Was pretty excited to try this for the QOL improvements.

What version of the mod did you use, and was it downloaded from FreshMeat-Blog?

On my Win10 machine I tried the 10/8.1 version, the 7 and Alpha ones. It was from the site you listed.

Tried it with various video settings both windowed and fullscreen using both launch options or with/without b.net.

Only thing I can think of is try running the inject.bat as administrator. If Diablo was installed to the default location of C:/GOG Games/Diablo it may explain why it's not working, and why it would need admin access. I have my copy installed to my user folder instead. I do that because Win Vista - 10 doesn't allow some older games to save in that location. Thus the reason why I didn't need to run it as admin. Hopefully that fixes the issue for both of you.

Just tried moving the installation on another machine that had the same issue to the USER folder and same issue sadly.

Torch mod works for Diablo 1.09, GOG's classic version is 1.09b I believe.

Even with Admin privileges, Torch will not work for me.

it will not work on 1.09b GOG, you need 1.09 for Torch mod.

edit: it works, see below.

Windows 7 x64, GOG's Diablo, Torch works like a charm. Both versions, Classic and dx, no problems.
