auroraparadox: Did anyone write a guide for installing Deus Ex mods? I just want to make sure I install everything in the right order.

EDIT: Please disregard, I just noticed there is a link to a guide on the opening post.

I do have one additional question. How stable are the HDTP releases?
avatar
boct1584: I don't think there are any stability issues with any of the HDTP releases.
Thanks boct1584.
Since this is my first time playing Deus Ex. I plan on only installing Deus Ex v2.0, New Vision, and the Project HDTP/Project HDTP beta releases.

Is there anything else I should consider installing for a first time play through?

I would also recommend Kentie's Launcher for mod management once you start installing more of them, as well as my fixed 03_NYC_Airfield map so your game doesn't crash when you get there. Otherwise, sounds good.

Thanks for the feedback. Do I need to install the mods in any particular order?
I'd follow emualynk's mod installation guide, which I linked in the opening post.

Thanks for pointing out the guide. I followed it and it the game looks great. I just finished the training and started a new game.

Do you have any recommendations as to what I should train in?

What I usually do to start is to upgrade Computers, Electronics, and Lockpicking. Computers allows you to hack terminals, which removes the need to ever find passwords if you don't feel like searching. Electronics and Lockpicking at Trained will take 25% off of a keypad or locked door with one multitool/lockpick. For all three, that's all you really need for the whole game, although if the game universe captures your fancy, you might want to upgrade Computers to Advanced to give you more time to read emails.

Honestly, there's no wrong way to build your character, but I will say that the skills that see the least use are probably Environmental Training and Swimming.

One note with Computers: You can hack ATMs too, and the higher the level of your Computer skill, the more money you can steal. Additionally, once you log out of a hacked ATM, it will be out of service, and you can't try to log in if you find an account and PIN.

Hey boct, thanks for keeping tabs on this thread! I'm similar to auroraparadox, looking to do my first playthrough. Was actually thinking of doing Renovation instead of 2.0, do you know much about the differences? And there's no way to get the updated UI in Enhanced without the Shifter gameplay mods, right?

Also, voodoo had mentioned this in the installation order guide:

http://www.gog.com/forum/deus_ex_series/deus_ex_augmentation_guide/post18

Would you recommend 'devolving' the gog version first? Would it fix things like the NYC Streets music and this?:

Thanks in advance

No, I don't know much about the differences between Deus Ex v2.0 and Human Renovation. G-Flex, the author of HR, posts on GOG; you could try PMing him, or alternately just read the two changelogs.

GOG's copy is pre-patched to v1112fm. Otherwise, drop those two files into DeusEx\Maps and you'll be good. Might want to back the originals up just to be safe.

Well, some of the changelogs are a foreign language to me, since I haven't played the game yet. And something tells me he'll recommend his own mod if I ask him :P But I get your meaning, and I'll look around some more.

Ok, perhaps voodoo's post was old or he was confused about what the patch would do. On a similar note, I did notice on Kentie's page that he recommended the following map patch:

http://www.dxm.be/navigator.php5?lang=en&content=202

Have you ever used this one? It seems similar, but doesn't seem like it mentions the same issues?

I've not used that particular fix, but I see no reason you couldn't try it. Do be aware, though, if you use Kentie's launcher, that fix apparently does nothing about the security bots in 03_NYC_Airfield, which is why I have that fixed map on my Mediafire account.

Ah, ok, so the Airfield issue wasn't something specific to the GOTY edition. Thanks again!

More precisely, the issue is not in 03_NYC_Airfield, it's in Kentie's launcher, but he either doesn't know what the problem is, doesn't know how to fix it, or has decided it's not worth fixing. So I solved it from the other side by removing the security bots that cause the crash.

It is odd that if you go to the downloads section of Kentie's website, and click on Old versions, there's some version of 03_NYC_Airfield.dx sitting in there. No idea about the backstory, but it must be something he's aware of.

He's definitely aware of the problem; there's a workaround to destroy the security bots via console commands before they can crash the game somewhere in the details of the launcher. I did tell him about what I did to make the new version of the map (removing the security bots using the SDK) and he mentioned possibly adding my fixed version of the map to his page. If there's a version there under his old files, then maybe the issue's been resolved.

EDIT: Just did some hash comparisons, and the version of the map on his Old Downloads page is the same as the one linked to from my Mediafire account. Guess he went ahead and did that, and just forgot to tell me.
