I have to use this patch becasue otherwise the game does not start (there is an error message). I just replace the deus.exe file and leave the deusex.u file untouched. The game executes and I am able to play. My question is the following: Do I play the revised version or the standard version?

I'm trying this at present. Hope it works.
Revision really should only be played after having experienced the vanilla game. While I appreciate Revision for what it is, particularly after its many updates, it is still an alternate version of the game to be played afterward.

A little known fact about the vanilla maps is that the Game of the Year Edition versions (which you will find with both Steam and GOG) are actually older prerelease versions of the maps. The differences are mostly minor, but still noticeable especially in a few areas. To fix this install the Deus Ex Maps Patch found here

If you are looking for a somewhat updated look I recommend just using New Vision for enhanced textures. I personally skip HDTP, while many of the object models are nice, the weapon models are really hit or miss. For instance the Riot Prod is a serious downgrade animation-wise from the original version. Last I checked HDTP still has not made the weapon models optional. Later versions of Revision added this feature, but again I think Deus Ex is best played with the vanilla maps first.

You will probably also need to update the renderer. There is Kentie’s DirectX 10 render found and Chris Dohnal’s DirectX 9 & OpenGl renderers found [url=http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/]here.

There is also a modified gameplay mod/patch called Human Renovation that Revision uses as a base. It is a personal favorite of mine even though I think it has some issues. Everyone should play the vanilla gameplay first. After all it is the original gameplay that defines Deus Ex. But Human Renovation is still worth taking a look at, it is found here.

While I agree that you might wanna try Vanilla first, try launching Revision via:
\Deus Ex GOTY\Revision\System\Revision.exe

I had probably the same problem, "failed to register RawInput Device"
Probably has something to do with your antivirus software.
Solved it this way:

I opened the Revision folder and started Revision.exe as admin. My antivirus(Comodo) asked if it should trust the game(it didn't ask without admin rights).
I selected yes and the game started properly. Now I can even start it in Galaxy without error.
