Does anyone know if the (older) version of "Destroy All Humans" is still available? Will it even run on Windows 7/Windows 8? The trailer for the new/improved version looks great, but I doubt my current system has a prayer in hell of running the new Destroy All Humans game. :(

According to Wikipedia the original from 2005 was never released for PC, so no, to answer your question, it was never available. However, that doesn't mean you should give up hope. Even after I beat it, it was one of the few games I continually went back to my PS2 for even with a wii-u and xbox360. If you have a PS2 then I recommend it and the sequel, which had additional stealth aspects making game play potentially different, but also quite enjoyable. Each game in the series advances a decade. The last one I did not enjoy as much as the first three.

If you don't have a PS2, or if its laser failed, then I can say that my old laptop from 2012 was able to run a very easy to configure opensource emulator smoothly along with a Dualshock USB adapter for my gamepad. I'd recommend buying the PlayStation 2 disk and running it in an emulator. If you have at least 6gb of ram, your computer can probably handle it, maybe even less. The best part of running emulators for this is that I have around 15 memory cards because if one game corrupts its save file it usually ruined all the saves on the card, as happened to me several times, leading to multiple cards to have back up save data, and a mental system to remember which of my 200 disks was saved to which card, and which card had the older back up save data. With a PC your save datas are isolated from each other and generally much safer, and easy to make back ups for. PS2 games were DVD's, so if your PC has a DVD drive the emulator will read the disk just fine. I do not advocate piracy; please use an opensource emulator, and an official disk. Last I checked PS2 games were about $6 each on eBay, and much cheaper at thrift stores, so there is no reason not to buy the officially licensed PS2 game disk.

TLDR: The 2005 original was not released for the PC, but was an excellent game on the PlayStation 2, and can be easily run on old or modest computers with a standard DVD drive through an opensource emulator if you buy the original disk. Also, the computers make the save data more reliable than the console memory card interface. I do not advocate piracy; please use an opensource emulator, and an official disk.

The free demo is running just fine for me on Win7 and five-year-old hardware. Give it a test run, you might be surprised.

OP is asking about the original version that was on the original xbox, not about whether the remastered version will work on their machine

Implying they would be open to playing the remake. So checking out the demo would allow them to determine whether that suspicion is accurate or not.

and there is no harm in trying the demo...
