I've had the game downloaded and installed for months, just haven't bothered playing it until now, and I noticed as I started up a new game that there wasn't any dialog. I checked immediately the options regarding it and everything was checked accordingly, as well as the volume meters were all on full. There is music, though there doesn't seem to be any sound effects either.

On a separate but related note, I have the same problem with Grim Fandango that I started up after I noticed this issue, just to see if it's a Double Fine thing.

I restarted the computer to see if it fixed it. It didn't.

My specs:

Windows 10 Pro
version 1607
OS Build 14393.576
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.50GHz
64 bit

Any help would be appreciated. I didn't seem to find any other threads about it.

Could be some Windows or driver updates, that doesn't work well with the games. Have you tried Grim Fandango after a reboot, to make sure both games are affected (otherwise it might be DotT that simply breaks the sound for both until reboot);

I've seen someone with Win10 fixing some issues by running the game in compatibility mode (for Windows 8). If Win8 mode doesn't help, you can also try Win7 or even older. (Right-click the game's shortcut and go to Properities. There you'll find a tab with compatibility settings)

Or maybe there's an update for your sound chip available. Win10 drivers are still often work in progress.

Just a quick question (I don't use Windows and can't offer any real advice) here, is there a chance that you have a surround sound sound card plugged into stereo speakers or headphones or whatever that aren't using all channels that the system is outputting? I've seen that sort of thing cause similar problems with other software/games.
I figured it out. There was a problem with my audio jack in the front of the computer. I think I have recently bent it with the cable stuck inside, so something is broken. I plugged it into the back and now it works fine.

Thank you both of you for your help though. I learned some new things that I'll keep in mind for similar issues in the future.

SOLVED!
