Hi guys!

TL:DR This makes things even better : https://www.darkreignws.com/download/

Our version of this game is 1.4, which is is the latest official release. However, the wonderful Dark Reign community created the unofficial patch (https://www.darkreignws.com/download/) that fixes many issues that were still present after the last official update, most notably the lack of TCP/IP multiplayer support. We can't use the patch for obvious reasons, but it is highly recommended. :)
In addition, the https://www.darkreignws.com/ community is still active and it is a nice place to find other people interested in this title.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The 1.7 version is disabling the in game music.

Lawman7072: Killing explorer fixes the menu in game, but leaves the in-game graphics still looking pretty high.

As far as I can tell, GOG version runs fine until you start playing with the run settings or the "Patch 1.7". I copied the "Patch 1.7" across to my laptop, and it ran just the same as on the desktop, same problems etc, without anything from GOG.

So I'm wondering how you used the files to patch up GOG's copy, and if that was what perhaps fixes the in-game graphics? I've tried copying/replacing the files directly, but that doesn't appear to work either.
Tried again just now and got the thing to work, finally. Surprisingly, I think I've already tried this before but it didn't work until now:

1. I installed the GOG version
2. Unpacked and copied the entire 1.7 patch folder into my GOG Dark Reign folder, allowing any duplicate files to be overwritten.
3. Wrote a taskkill batch file for both Dark Reign and Expansion to replace GOG's game launchers. (I once got the game to work without this, but colors started to be weird again so I'm now killing Explorer by default on game launch which fixes both the menu and in-game, in my case)
4. Launched the game from my new batch files and everything seems to work now, both original game and expansion

Crossing fingers it will work for you, as well. Good luck, I'm all out of ideas otherwise so I hope this works!
I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64bit as admin.
So did they ever manage to fix the Patch 1.7 and Gog-version? The Gog.version works fine for me, game wise. No game breakers anywhere. But would have been nice to be able to use the unofficial patch benefits. Like playing online and such.
The 1.7 version for GOG should be better explained, so I merged explanation texts with .vs website:

Element_dr: Hello folks,
I created the original patch for Dark Reign to get multiplayer working. I assume it will work with GOG's version of Dark Reign:
Patch for GOG DR multiplayer

My patch changes the network code slightly - makes it compatible with XP and above. It also adds the server everyone plays on as default (though there are a couple other servers in there).

The 1.7 patch is just an original Dark Reign installation with 1.2, 1.4, the expansion pack, and art pack installed,
plus some extra maps/art/units/game conversions that existed.

Afaict - GoG have made a distribution with 1.2, 1.4, the expansion pack, and art pack
and a custom music loader that plays from mp3 rather than cd.

So if you install my here networking patch on GoG's version, you should have a current "1.7" version minus the extra maps/units/art work

To install it, unzip to your DR directory overwriting the original files. Back those up also.

The antivirus says that contains a trojan horse, not sure if it is
a false positive xD
dark reign ws went offline! I made a youtube channel called "Dark Reign WS Channel". You can download Dark Reign 1.7 as well as Dark Reign - Xenite vs Machine - Evolution of Xenite from there!

ELEMENT YOU LEGEND... YOU STILL AROUND?? - Kanga
The website is gone but I will not let the multiplayer community die. It's now based on Discord (here is the link to join discord.gg/fhgQwub). The 1.7 client is available to download here.

Wow. Element posted here. It's Marquis (or InvaderZim) here but you probably won't remember me. It was 13 years ago..

I hope to see some of you guys coming to say hello and even play a few games. I hope to eventually set up a regular weekend thing. We have the source code for the battlezone multiplayer server backend and everything required to keep Dark Reign going a long, long time. Everything works fine on windows 10 tested in multiplayer with my friends. Even edited the game wikipedia page to point to the new community hub.

Cya 'round! :)

Hi Paczyk,

I just wanted to make you aware of the following thread, which points out that there is apparently a problem with the (unmodified) GOG version of Dark Reign, which makes it impossible to save, while saving with an original Dark Reign version with a CD works. Would be great, to hear whether GOG plans to work on fixing this issue as in the current state the GOG version of Dark Reign is not fully functional. Thank you very much in advance.

https://www.gog.com/forum/dark_reign_series/so_windows_10_support_is_a_lie
I just encountered the above mentioned save crash :( Does GOG have any plans of investigating?
My crashes when i save or try to load a saved game!
I need some help with the 1.8.1 patch. It's a 600MB ZIP file that comes with the entire game, right? Does the game inside that ZIP already comes patched up? Or do I need to apply patches to these files? Or do I paste these files on top of a GOG install? Overwrite files?
It's lacking instructions.

I'm also getting the "No CD in drive" message.
Any chance of someone still having copies of the older versions of the patch? Pre-2011 versions?
We would be able to play the game at least, since newer versions seem to be the ones that introduced new problems? Did the game worked before 2011?

Also, a 2nd problem seems to be the way executables need NET Framework. This creates problems for Linux users (Windows-specific DLL's) The executables called "Original Game" and "Expansion" do not run on Linux because they ask for NET Framework files. The dark-reign.exe works but it asks for CD.
