ZellSF: If you're implying Activision or GoG should hack in support for resolutions that were never supported, your expectations are unrealistic. Almost no one does this when re-releasing games, unless they're remastering them (and then they usually charge more for the job too).

It isn't hard to get 1080p working though.
I would love to see how you could get it working because I see no resolution commands in config files or regedit keys whatsover and the dgvoodoo2 injectors don't work at all.

The game isn't locked to 4:3 resolutions only and supports up to 1768x962. How is it unrealistic to ask for something that could be easily fixed by the developers? 1920x1200 users also be damned.

I wouldn't really call "getting the music to work" worthy of a remaster. Could you imagine if you bought Warcraft 2 and quickly realised music is broken in Windows 10? You MUST be respected as a consumer.

dgVoodoo2 is the easy solution and should work on any PC that supports DX11. It's also the vastly superior solution as it supports proper UI scaling and lets the game work internally at a supported resolution.

Actually it supports from 640x480 up to 1900x1900. You can open dr2.exe in a hex editor if you want to mess with this these limits (that might be in place for good reasons). Just search for:

80 02 00 00 0F 82 D9 00 00 00 81 7D FC E0 01 00 00 0F 82 CC 00 00 00 81 7D 08 6C 07 00 00 0F 87 BF 00 00 00 81 7D FC 6C 07

80 02 = 640
E0 01 = 480
6C 07 = 1900

Here's a table with common values to replace them with:
http://www.wsgf.org/article/common-hex-values

Dark Reign 2 is limited to 23 resolutions, so you'll need to edit both the minimum and maximum value if you want to use a higher resolution.

Your assumption that it is easily fixed by the developers is bad. That's why it's unrealistic.

Turns out dgVoodoo2 does work now that I'm more familiar with it. Forced 1080p, 4x antialiasing and Reshade to top it off but kinda messed up fonts only so far. Nothing about the audio yet.

Using a disk image I got somewhere doesn't work. Changing directories in the registry with the help of another program doesn't work.

Knowing that this is probably over your head, here's some notes about text rendering and what could give optimal results.

Try to stick to integer scales for resolution forcing, if you want to force resolution to 1920x1080 for example you need to force it from 960x540. Unfortunately, text looks sort of bad at 960x540 for Dark Reign 2. It's still better than non-integer scaling though.

MSAA (the only antialiasing available in dgVoodoo) makes text look bad. Don't use it. If you want antialiasing you should use post-processing AA (for example ReShade's SMAA, or look into AMD's MLAA or Nvidia's FXAA), unfortunately post-processing AA looks worse both the lower your display resolution is and the lower your resolution force factor is. 1920x1080 is a low resolution and your max scale factor is 2 (960x540*2).

If I had a 1080p display I would probably just set the game to 1280x720, and set dgVoodoo to force resolution to 3840x2160, use your GPU drivers downsampling options to add 3840x2160 as a supported resolution. For AMD look for VRS and for Nvidia DSR then add post-processing AA. Attached an screenshot of approximately how that should look.

As for music, it's a core feature of the game. You should complain to GOG support about that, not on these forums, that way maybe something gets done. They have a winmm wrapper that works on Windows 10 so they should be able to fix it. Personally I would use _inmm or DxWnd until then, but neither is something I would recommend to someone having trouble figuring dgVoodoo out.
Attachments:
Yeah, you're right. Using 1280x720 as a base and upscaling it internally using dgVoodoo2 looks much better than setting it to 1920x1080, not 100% the same as your picture but close enough:

Forced 1080p 4xAA - https://i.imgur.com/7CfjcT7.jpg
In-game 720p 3xRes 4xAA 2xAF - https://i.imgur.com/A1e94HO.jpg
In-game 720p 3xRes No AA 2xAF - https://i.imgur.com/3q86Sgl.jpg

dgVoodoo's antialiasing doesn't seem to affect text since it's still messy in the third picture. I would avoid using Reshade's SMAA because it's pretty mediocre compared to other methods.

Installing dgvoodoo with these settings is very easy. All it needs is the customized .conf file and the others.
I made a simple pack for Earth 2150 that installs both dgvoodoo and Reshade and it works great.

Quite astoundingly, I found that renaming the original dr2.exe file to dkreign.exe restores music quite well. The only problem is that it now it requires a CD and you cannot start the campaign or anything even with one.

So has there been anyway to fix the save issue with the original dark reign? i somehow had it working for a little bit then it stopped and I ran it as admin and it worked again and again stopped it seems that some file is missing or something.

It works for me on Windows 10 Pro, though it does crash every time when I exit the game. I do use Norton Utilities to clean up my computer on a regular basis. It's my Diablo 2 SSD lol, hence I update it every so often when I get the urge to boot it up (Plugy version)

Maybe copy your save files to some folder and try a clean re-install after rechecking for all updates? (OS, drivers, GPU, etc.)

Then again, GOG does post this warning below in the store page for Dark Reign and other Windows 10 games.

"Please be advised that Windows 10 operating system will receive frequent hardware driver and software updates following its release; this may affect game compatibility"

So, who knows. Windows updates do mess up things sometimes. Maybe they'll get it right with Windows 11?

P.S. I also installed it as Admin. This and D2 are the only games I have installed on Win10, all others I install as Admin on Win7, since I also disabled the network on that SSD anyway given there are no more updates and everything works so far.

P.P.S. I haven't used any fan patches or anything like it, just FYI. Just a simple offline installer, no Galaxy.

The 1.4 version works on Windows 10 for me but the campaign is unplayable without the save bug being fixed. Community patch is a must even if you want to save the game during the campaign.

Apparently the game has been updated with the configurable homemade wrapper used in other titles. Now the game and expansion are bundled together, just one shortcut, and switching the original game and expansion ingame works well. The game runs smooth at desktop resolution. But I am not tested if the legacy save bug in the campaign is fixed. Probably.

I tried playing the campaign with the new installer and... I can't build any units. Their icons are simply not there...

P.S. The problem is only present in the original campaign, the expansion seems fine... looks like something got screwed up big time when they conjoined the executables.

Indeed. The Tutorial runs fine, not tested the personalized missions but the in the campaign you are not able to build unts. The save system seems to work fine though

Damn. It was too pretty to be real :D because the game looks and play smooth now without cheap explorer shutdowns or legacy CD Checks messages or save systems garbled.

A ticket must be opened indeed. This game is cursed :D

Praise offline installer backups, although I think I'll wait for a fix if the campaign save bug is indeed gone in the new revision... that was really putting me off during the campaign.

I'll let you do the honors, I have bugged support long enough :P.

I saved in the campaign first mission and apparently all is fine, no crashes or freezes if that was the so called problem.

Well I have reported the problem via the issue tracker under Galaxy. I hope It gives it visibility.
