I think that this series has a lot of potential of selling many copies and still being a great game and true to the heart of the series. New people would love the action, gore, weapons, and the environments in the game, while fans will enjoy the old school isotopic strategic shooter fun of the originals. A possibility of online mode would be fun with the environments, weapons, and I new take of shooters online with players going around the made using spider bombs and rolling over the place. It is that I hope some one gets the licence to do this without involvement of EA, or I could smell another cash grab (like the mobile Dungeon Keeper). Just say what you think of this idea, I know the 2 game ended in a great ending, but the president of the WEC is still around trying to defeat the Crusader and his rebel allies.

Unfortunately, the original designer of the game, Tony Zurovec, had a pretty bad experience with EA and was never paid royalties for these games back in the day. I don't see him getting his hands on the franchise anytime soon, and while others could do a fine job, such cases are too rare. Worst case would be what happened to Syndicate. Best case, EA pays Tony the royalties they owe him and hires him to make a sequel, and gives him near total creative control. Though with so much time passed, it would likely have to be a totally different beast from the sequel that had been in development, Crusader: No Mercy.

Very True, but the idea of a new Crusader game is a dream that the right studio can get the rights and easily make a new Crusader game. Tony did a good job on the series, and damn EA for having the rights to them atm.
I would be all for a sequel/reboot/remake and if they keep it true to the originals (isometric perspective and Robocop like atmosphere) I don't even care if EA makes it. =)
If Tony can't continue on the series maybe he can create some sort of spiritual successor like Death Paladin. =D

As much as I would love to see a sequel )and see what happens to the WEC and the silkencer), I just feel there are too many factors that will screw up the spirit of the original games.

Would the devs feel the need to do something like Bethesda did to Fallout? Turning a 2D isometric role playing game with emphasis on story and dialog and changing it into a 3D FPS with emphasis on blowing shit up isn't a sequel, it's rebranding. Don't get me wrong, I've not played Fallout 3 so I'm not hating on it, but with the huge technology changes and advances in game development as well as market changes over the years, would it still stay true to the original? In Fallout's case, nope.

Speaking of the markets, remember back then gaming was a niche market but it's now a mainstream one which means in order to get the most number of sales, your going to have to appeal to the mass market and classic games aren't products the mass market are interested in. One only needs to look at some AAA titles that essentially hold your hand through the entire game as well see online comments whining about sucky graphics to see the truth of my words.

Even littler things like the FMV sequences, how would they be dealt with? It wouldn't be Crusader without some of the characters returning (especially Colonel Ely who was in both games). Did any one play Star Wars: Jedi Knight and Jedi Outcast? In the first game, FMV was used but in the second, all cut scenes were done using the in game models. Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors transition to the sequel didn't feel right. I felt the first was more Star Warsy. Not only do we have the FMV to in game engine cut scene transition, back then, heroes in games were usually silent. It's going to be odd watching a cut scene where everyone talks except the main character. So now the silencer needs a voice.......which he didn't need before. What to do, what to do?

I would love to see a remake or sequel, but if it's to be done, it won't be by a giant like EA. It will have to be a small group of people who were fans of the originals who won't have profit as their main driving force. Also EA will have be willing to hand over the rights but we know they won't sell for anything less than 100 souls.

Great post here, to be far FMV's would be hard to do unless they go really cheap budget, so I guess more cheesiness would be more entertaining.

Very true except EA has the license and I wonder why no one has got the licence yet since EA is doing nothing with it. To be honest, EA can get a small studio to remake or make a k sequel with most of the soul to the original games.

I doubt a sequal would be isometric...it seems only independent companies make that type of game anymore. Most likely, a sequal would be made into a FPS. If it was done well, I would probably play it and maybe even like it, but it wouldn't exactly be the same type of game, obviously.

I played Fallout 3 and enjoyed it, but it was nothing like F1/F2, and the rpg element was not as engaging as it was in the those original two games. The upside to FPS, though, are that they give more tactical options. F1/F2 you couldn;t really hide behind a rock and fire at the enemy, but in F3 you could. So there are positive and negative trade-offs to switching play styles.

Fair enough, they can keep the crusader spirit in FPS (the weapons, interactive kill environment, acrobatic moves) it would be a different taste of what Crusader is.
Fallout makes me sad these days because it changed so much (the gameplay focus, rpg elements dumbing down, complete ignoring of the original Fallout's story, etc). The way Bethesda did Fallout 3 from 1 and 2 is not how I want some one do a Crusader game. (But New Vegas was awesome but it was made by Obsidian).
If anything it should be a third person shooter. Maybe a bit like the uncharted series, but with a lot more graphic violence, destructible environments, and not as linear.

Hmm, first time i heard that for the new take of the Crusader games. Would be very interesting take on the Crusader game play. The games were linear due to rush development time. But the first game was not badly linear though.
bumped, as I am a huge fan of this awesome series, and would love a developer to make another game similar style to the crusader games :D
A sequel would be awesome!
Just imagine "Crusader: No Mercy" with the same action but with RPG elements like skill tree, armor upgrades, etc.
I've been waiting for "Sci-Fi Diablo" for years, but there's still no such game! :(
There's no need to change graphics (maybe a little bit) or isometric view.
I would back it up on Kickstarter on the first day, for sure!

There are a couple of 'sci-fi Diablo' type of games out there:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/harbinger
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/space-siege

And then there's much more action-oriented games:

And the upcoming 'Bombshell', should be on GOG January 29:

Thanks a lot! Some of them look interesting, definitely worth a try.

By the way I came across a video with Tony Zurovec, an interview after he joined the team who's creating Star Citizen game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dL3nrrj2ZA
Probably it's a perfect place for him, the game looks very promising.
Maybe he could make a sequel for Crusader via Kickstarter, but with this new game he might fulfill his ideas.

Ah, that's cool that he's back with his former Origin co-workers, looks like he'll be keeping busy. :-)
