Yes, but the game is really beaten when you manage to clear it using no continues.

If you use a continue, the game cuts off right before the final boss and tells you to not use any continues. It's functionally equivalent to not having continues at all if you intend to actually beat the game. In addition, the trophies on the left side of the screen reflect how far you've gotten in each mode without continuing, this is the only progress the game considers legitimate.
