None of the Cossack games seems to let me move the mouse pointer once I arrive at the main menu. The music plays but I cannot go any further.

I am running Windows 7 and ran the installastion file with administer privliges and in XP compatibility mode.
Restarting the computer did not work and I am sure my drivers are up to date.
Reinstalling also failed to fix it.

The two Thief games and Deus Ex which I purchased at the same time are working well.

Is it possible that you have a Quad Core CPU? The games seem to have problems with those.

There are some tools out there that allow you to set the affinity before running an application. The one I tried was Set Affinity II. You can find it here.

Please let me know whether this solved the problem.

F4LL0UT: Please let me know whether this solved the problem.
I am afraid it did not.
I must admit that this is the first time I have used a program like that but the problem is still the same. I even tried to change the affinity using Task Manager but it denied me access.

After setting it to a single core the mouse pointer remained inactive.
Same problem here with a demo of Cossacks: The Art of War back from 2001.

I tried to run it on XP in Parallels 7. Seems like only the picture is frozen, because moving around with the mouse produces certain sound effects like hovering over the menu items would do. Music is probably not present in the demo.

This problem, which most likely seems to occur on the GOG version too, keeps me from buying the game.

Okay, so considering xoibens information it seems to be a visual problem only. Do you have a Radeon or Nvidia graphics card?
A Nvidia graphics card.
I'm having this same problem, nvidia card here also.

Yeah I've got Nvidia card too and I'm not seeing these issues. Could you guys post DXDiag to see if there's something else similar in your configurations?

I hope this video shows how to get it, I can't watch it at the moment sadly.

Is this all the information you need? It seemed pointless to post all the data. Upon looking at it I might be wrong about my graphics. If so I apologise, I have been delving a bit to deeply into software programming and negleting my knowledge of hardware as a result.

CountRaven: ...
Hmmm, I've noticed that Cossacs can have certain issues with non-standard resolutions. It's a long shot, but try changing it to 4:3 resolution (ideally 1024 x 768) and see what that does. It's a long shot, but it might work. If it doesn't, well, we'll just have to wait for DXDiag of someone else with a similar issue.

No luck I am afraid.
The change in resolution did not seem to solve it.
I Will Post specs of 2 of my computers as well, cossacks works on one of them:

one common point with CountRaven's: The computer on which it don't work also runs on a laptop with Intel HD Graphics. It may be because of the switch to the alternate Graphics Card?

Hope it helps. I will post a dxdiag of another laptop which doesn't use an Intel HD
