I got tired of not finding an editor for CNW.
I searched in vain for a file editor, even tried editors for other games. I got really close with DOOM of all things and it in turn led to a eureka moment. I used WINRAR ((has a free version and is like winzip)) to open the DATA.WAD file. You open the file selecting to open a file in winrar and selecting your gog/CNW directory and DATA.WAD file. Once opened I moved all the game types, i.e. Natives, Survivor Conquistador et al and placed them in the CNW directory itself which I had opened and ready. This has not caused an error yet as it does not remove the core files, it just copies them. The files showed up as BE2 files which are what you use when selecting the template option in the games bar.

I did in fact load the game and selected templates, and there they were.
I loaded each type and discovered it kept to the rules of that particular game. So Natives was 1v1. So if you pick Spain you play France. ;-( Survivor had only 4 playable spots and conquistador was normal. But you could edit them to your liking.

To further explain:
So now you can play the Natives game, and actually select how the map works like a custom scenario. Example, I gave the Natives useful bonuses, set the map to largest, made resources abundant, altered native tribes and made movement easy et al.

You can play survivor as Dutch or Natives, but it removes the Spanish altogether. But again, you can totally customize the map and special abilities. I have a Dutch game going, just drowning in gold.

Conquistador can now be set to go beyond 100 turns, which makes that selection now worth it, finally.

So in the end I made a stopgap editor that should lead to many more hours spent playing.

Orethan
You should make a youtube video. prabably like 6 times a year since 2000, i waist friday saturday and sunday playing this game. Its perfect and yet could be better. My whole goal in life is to make millions to make a better version of this game.

Indeed.

After reading over what I wrote it really doesn't seem that helpful for another user.
My explanation could use my information. I came across it today because I wanted to use the same technique with other games of this era.
I will look into your advice on a youtube video.

I will say that it is not an editor you download but a technique to allow the user to play more in depth games. And they are much better for it.
It even solves some of the game issues like saving but your player name can't be found.

I will recheck the rules of the forum, maybe I can just upload the files in a zip.

I would love for a moderator to clarify. It is eight files in total and they are roughly 56 KB in total.

I have attached an image of the files as they appear in my GoG-CNW directory.

Many people just put files up on Google Drive and post the links here. That seems to work really well.
Behold, this game is forever changed... if the files work for you.
Please make sure to protect. No malice on my part.
You can message me if the readme is not helpful.

Thank you! I'll have to play with these.
This is good information. One can use Notepad++ to run a compare on the edited NATIVES.BE2 in the folder in the GoogleDrive download with the original and see how changes might be made

That is correct, my best example is having changing the Native all around, like giving them starting units at level 4, leaders, military units settler-which can be given increased starting resources.

That file is also accessible in the create new game>template>natives2 selection allowing you to treat the game as if it was custom scenario. From that selection you can change resources, leader attributes and amount of tribes "et al" as if it was a custom scenario. And all the files templates can also be adjusted as a custom scenario.

I have created games in which the natives get a colony ship every turn for ten turns on a conquest template. Harder to do this with European players as they share the same coding. i.e. you cant give spanish level 4. and the dutch level 1 units in Notepad+++, so all actions are shared if that helps. Only the natives have stand alone coding-but you cannot give them european units(artillery) or boats above level 2.

However, that can be accomplished using scenario creation where you can add all level of units.
Awesome job! I just recently had a really fun Conqueror game cut short at turn 100. Glad for other possibilities now!

Here if I can help any further.
So this is a bit of a necro-post but what version of WinRAR did you use to open the .WAD files? My install doesn't seem to recognize them.

Do you know if you're able to access any of the files containing the graphics data? Sprites, and whatnot?

Message received, I am using 7.01, it is a 30 day use as I rarely use it now. I checked today and I was just able to extract the files using win10 so it still works. I prefer not to use gog galaxy or cloud support for this game, my preference. But I find where the game is installed: example below

C:\GOG Games\Conquest of the New World

then find the DATA file, a .WAD. I tend to have the files grouped by type. WAD are usually the last files descending

1. open winrar, go through ads prompts unless purchased and then just drag the data file onto the winrar window leave it up.

2. create a random file on your desktop and name it "what for."

3. go back to winrar and right click on the data and select extract to folder. when the search destination populates make sure you then select desktop as the source and look for your folder, select it and the files should extract to it.

Among the files is a folder named template and it contains the base scenarios as BE2 files, select them all and drag them into the gog CNW folder. If it is set to organize by groups there should be a grouping of BE2 fiels

Start the game, go through titles and movie and at the main menu (type in the cheat words now if you use them)
select CREATE NEW GAME
then select TEMPLATE and all the scenarios will be present.
You can play all of them as if the were a custom scenario.

You can edit them to your liking as long as you dont go crazy. I have never written a how to, but there are things you can and cannot change.

The game will tell you the error and the line SO USE NOTEPAD+++

I can give more info if you want. I still play the game a few times a year

but I have made some fantastic scenarios

Cheers
