I started the first mission and I saved it as soon as I started it. I continued on and saved quite a few times through the next few levels and saved over the same save. When I went to load it it just reloaded me back to the first save I ever had. Eh?

I had exact same issue
I haven't tried myself but perhaps trying to use multiple spots would work and deleting your previous saves as you go?
