For some reason, sometimes when I use the "Scrye" ability to see visions of the past, like in the kids room I hear audio of something happening, but don't see any 3D models, however in other places like the monastary I see monks etc. along with the audio. Are some visions supposed to be audio only, or is this a bug?
It's completely normal. Scrying is scripted in that sometimes it reveals only sounds, sometimes it shows you the ghosts of people who died there, and sometimes it alters the appearance of visible objects that seem normal (like paintings). The visions were put in by the developers, and thus they are diverse. Where there are no scripted scrying events, Scrye can still be useful to brighten dark areas and highlight enemies.

Right, I use it for better vision all the time as the game can be quite dark, it just seemed like I SHOULD be seeing something, like in the pool room etc. Good to know it's working as intended, thank you.
