I've been playing Castles 2 and I recently had a problem. When I went to load my game, I would gather resources just fine, but when I went to attack a neighboring territory, after the task bar gets full and the panel flips over, it just says attack complete and the territory isn't taken over. I have the battles turned on and events turned on as well. And when I went to reload the game, the colors went all funky and the game crashed. Anyone had this problem or anything like it? I'm not really sure what went wrong, any help would be great.
I have this same problem, and others. Sometimes I get a blank black screen when I attempt to go the castle menu from the build castle screen. It's really frustrating because it usually happens when I am just beginning to establish myself in the game. Anybody else run into these? Do we dare hope for support from GOG?
I too have this problem, and it means you can basically never resume from a savegame, which makes the game a lotless fun, starting over all the time.
can you check the size of the savegame ?

I can do better, I've uploaded two saves, for your perusal. Both saves have the problem mentioned above.

Just wanted to add that I too have this problem as well, which is def. a bummer. Load up my game go to attack someone or seek council and nothing happens. :(

How do I create the Dxdiags etc ... to submit to Technical support? This appears to still be a problem with Castles II. Unless someone else has found a fix for these problems?
I also just got a black screen when going to do castle design. The game hasn't crashed yet, and the in-game cursor is still moving around though.

For what it's worth, this is only my second game, and for my previous game I was using my own castle design from scratch. This time, I was using an existing design, Bodiam, but I had modified it slightly. As soon as I clicked to Load the design, the screen went black.

Considering this problem goes back a couple of years, it seems unlikely that it will get a fix, if one is even possible.

To create Dxdiag please go to your start menu -> run and type in dxdiag
Hope that helps.

Go it. Will do.

Something that might be interesting ... is there anyone who doesn't have these problems after loading saved games? If you don't, posting your specs like OS, DosBox version, cpu, gpu, etc ... might be helpful in determining the cause of this bug.

EDIT: Bug report submitted. It says on the bug report page that my message is supposed to show up on my account page after about 5 minutes. Does anyone know where it supposed to show up? I can't find it.

I was wondering if you know whether or not tech support got my bug report? Cheers.
Seems like it's a pretty general issue. I just ran into that savegame problem too. What seems to happen is that the loading screen buggers things between screens. It's not as big a deal when you're playing a first runthrough, although the music speeds up for no reason.

When a game is loaded, the messenger screens simply don't appear, so you don't get diplomacy, plots, movies, or anything that pops up. The game doesn't like that too much.

Yup ... same exact problems I experiences (including the music getting sped up during the first play through) ... ah well.
Make sure that your user account has Administrator privileges and that User Account Control is disabled in your operating system. To do this, go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control settings. Move the slider to the lowest position ("Never notify") and click OK.

Now, try launching Castles 2 by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting "Run as Administrator" and check if the problem persists, but don't use the savegame files you currently have. Try starting a new game, create a new savegame, load it and see if the progress bar issue is still there.
