Hey guys!

Here we go again.

I just tried Carmageddon 2, and it installs OK, but when I try to start the game, I get a dialog saying that "CARMA2_HW.exe has stopped working." Any idea what's going on?

Windows 8.1
AMD FX-8350 cpu
AMD Radeon HD 6800 graphics card
8GB system RAM.

Not sure if it will help, but you could try compatibility options and see if any help, maybe trying to set it to Windows 7 or XP.

Could also try changing options in the nglide_config.exe. There's also a Glide Wrapper that might help, not sure though http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/index.html

Haven't really bothered playing Carma 2 because the GOG version seems partially useless, the cars wheels don't quickly auto straighten unless using a controller which makes it pretty much impossible to steer thus play on keyboard, haven't bothered looking for a fix because I'm not the biggest fan of Carma 2.
Well, I've tried setting compatibility modes and playing around with the nglide config, no luck. Even Carma2_SW.exe crashes at start, it's quite annoying.

Not sure about that wrapper, as it hasn't been updated since 2005. Not even sure it'd work here on Win8...

EDIT: Welp, tried the wrapper, no luck....

You've encounted the same issue that I had (http://www.gog.com/forum/carmageddon_series/carma2_hwexe_has_stopped_working) but it never got resolved, and I got offered a gift certificate. Hopefully it will get resolved at some point :(

Yeah, I saw that. Clearly it's an issue with the install in Win8.1, if not in Win8 outright... Hopefully they'll get on with fixing it, because I've made it pretty clear that the refund/gift certificate isn't going to cut it. I wanna play the game, damn it. :(
I think I may have found the missing link in the puzzle.

Curious after being able to get the game running in Linux under PlayOnLinux, I came back to my Windows drive and uninstalled the games. Then, I uninstalled a program called Spybot Search and Destroy, which provides, among other things, immunization from "hostile" webfiles. After a reboot, I cleaned the registry, then reinstalled the games, and lo and behold, there's Carmageddon 2 working AOK.

I'm gonna play it some more, see if it holds up, but I think I may have licked the issue!

Interesting, as I've been using Spybot S&D for a long time and Carmageddon 2 from GOG works for me just fine.

EDIT: Maybe it depends on which features of Spybot S&D are active and being used? Mine is just used as a spyware/malware scanner every once in a while, I don't use the immunization functionality.

That could have been it. I WAS using their immunization. Really the only thing I wanted from it since I have ZoneAlarm and the registry cleaner was moved behind the paywall (I now use little registry cleaner, a very nice little piece of work).

I've fixed it, but am not using a GOG release. I personally own the Carmageddon 2 CD Rom. You can check my fix here. I did the video tutorial on how to get it running on windows 8.1 \ 8

Am using Nvidia GTX 780ti though. And i dont have to run in compatibility mode
