I can't get Nico to use the validated ID card on the card reader. The game won't respond to the next/previous objects keys when I go to the door. I have tried moving Nico to several places around the door, but she keeps focusing on the doorknob and not the card-reader.

Pressing either PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN selected the card-reader for me. But I presume you already tried that? If so, try remapping the controls to some other key combination and see if that helps.
(Used your savegame, so nothing wrong with that)

I already tried remapping, but that didn't work either.

Very odd. What kind of PC is it running on, which OS and keyboard layout?

I have an HP Pavilion ze4400 series laptop with Windows XP Home Edition (with all of the critical updates). I mapped previous/next object to the "z" & "x" keys and I also tried mapping them to the comma and period keys.

Nothing out of the ordinary then... Is that card-reader the first time in the game where you have to actively select another on-screen object, or has it worked earlier on in the game?
(Have not played this since it came out originally, so I cannot remember :-))

The object selection was buggy before, but I usually was able to move my character into view of the object (or the previous/next object commands would start to work right again for no reason). I would later test my keyboard on notepad and found no problems with the keys themselves.

Hmmm.. I'm running out of ideas, fast. Have you tried closing all other applications, disabling antivirus/antispyware products etc.? Or for that matter removing any gamepad or joystick that may be connected to the PC.

I gave a crack at unplugging all of my usb devices and turning off all unnecessary programs, but the problem persists. Maybe it's just a problem with an piece of internal hardware or a process I cannot disable without going to the task manager. Posting up a savegame that is past the door might be easier.

If you can live with that, then I will produce one for you. Might take ½ an hour or so though.

Thanks.
Here you go, this is immediately after using the card in the card-reader:

No problem. Hope you can make it through the rest of the game without further issues.
