All the spek sheets look virtually identical

I also did a test with Aqua Kitty's soundtrack, which I purchased in FLAC.

1) The FLAC source file
2) The FLAC source converted to MP3
3) The MP3 converted back to FLAC again

results are about as one would expect. It looks like all they did was convert the MP3 files to FLAC


the takeaway here is the files provided by GOG are near identical, where other sources of the soundtrack show a distinct, marked difference between FLAC and MP3 files

It is odd, though, that the GOG soundtrack shows a 48 kilohertz framerate, over the 44.1 kilohertz Fangamer framerate. Somewhere out there there should be a version with a 48 kilohertz framerate and full spectrum detail.

I guess we'll have to wait until the vinyls come out.

There is now a rip of the Kickstarter backer release of the OST out there on the web which has true lossless FLACs

Open a support ticket and complain about it. They really shouldn't be advertising a lossless FLAC soundtrack if it is indeed an MP3 conversion.

As stated before the backer version appears to be true lossless audio and comes in at 849MB. So there should be no reason whatsoever for them to be selling a subpar conversion in it's place.

Okay, here is the info that I pulled from the Bloodstained Theme for both the MP3 and FLAC versions. This is from the backer download btw.

FLAC sample rate is at 44100 Hz with 16 Bits per sample.
MP3 sample rate is at 44100 Hz with 64 kb/s.

I am just at a total loss at what the hell they are trying to do with this. Why exactly are the GOG releases found at a 48000 Hz sample rate in comparison? Shouldn't they all be exactly the same?

Still no changes to the "fake" FLAC OST on GOG?
If so at this point there is really no recommendation unless someone opened a ticket and there is an answer to this...

GOG just confirmed with me that they are looking into it. That is about all I can say atm.

The real FLAC Soundtrack is now here on GOG. It sounds definitely better than the fake one.

Just ran it through two lossless audio checkers. Most tracks come up as CDDA. A handful show as upsampled. With the number that come up as upsampled being so few, I'm going to call those false-positives.

Which checkers did you use? I just tried the one from losslessaudiochecker.com, and it said that two of the four random .mp3 files I tested were lossless, which is clearly a terrible detection rate.

Also, can either of you upload the spek (spek.cc) spectrum graphs of the tracks to confirm there's actually an improvement?
For example, I've attached the spectrums from my backer soundtrack (from fangamer) of the main theme, Call of Eternity, Theme of OD, and Theme of Tamako, which show a very marked difference in these vs the GOG flac spectrums posted earlier. Even Tamako, which has the least difference, still has a distinct dropoff at about 16kHz in the old GOG spectrum, whereas the fangamer one has no such cut.

I used both that one and Audiochecker 2.0.0.457. Here's what it turned up for Call of Eternity.

they even have proper fades. 99% sure they came from the CD release with slight metadata edits
