wnorthrup: I didn't uninstall Acronis because I need it for backup. I intend to move to something less intrusive for that purpose but have not done it yet. Having said that, I turned off or blocked everything I could think of in Acronis and still had the hangs. It will also hang after cut scenes, except those hangs are permanent. Look forward to hearing how you make out, but I'm pretty convinced at this point it's just buggy when you combine that with the gun not firing issue.
PraetorianWolfie: A new update for the enhanced edition of the game just got released on GOG.
Looking at the changelog they did address the shooting bugs. I think they might have fixed the VK bug too.
I haven't got around to testing this personally as of yet though.
I played through this version. It is MUCH improved and is playable. The V-K delays are gone. The gun does not work perfectly, but it works much better. It has a "skip" function that is useful if you are playing for the nth time and don't need to watch the cut scenes over and over. F1 toggles a "help box" at the upper left. I'm not sure what the graphics toggle does ("Q" key). It makes the backgrounds look "smoother" or slightly pixelated. To each their own I suppose. Anyway, this is a vast improvement over the previous version.
