So I recently decided to play this great game again for the first time in years and years.
But I'm a little confused about which aspect ratio the game was made for.
When you start the game with the gog created "launch Beneath a Steel Sky" shortcut, it takes up almost a whole 16:9 screen, which I found a bit odd.
If you run ScummVM manually and set it to maintain aspect ratio, the game runs in 4:3 but it does seem a little squished to me.
The vast majority of images and videos I can find of the game online seem to look more like the 16:9 ish aspect ratio so I'm really a bit confused as to which aspect ratio the game is actually meant to use.
Does anybody here know the answer?

AFAIK, older games were made with CRT monitors in mind, which had rectangular pixels or something of the sort. That's why they don't stretch abnormally when played at 16:9 resolutions.
Please, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

The game was made in an era when 4:3 was the norm. And while games not always ran in 4:3 resolutions, they were, most of the time, optimized for them.

Hi,
what you call '16:9ish' aspect ratio is actually the original 320x200 VGA resolution, set to fit your display's height. Also, emulators like ScummVM and DOSBox default with their respective aspect commands set to 'off', in order to preserve that screen ratio.

You'll find people telling you that's just wrong - because we had 4:3 crt monitors back then, so we didn't play with such a wide window - as well as others (like you and myself) who can't help but find 4:3 too narrow, today. Personally, I like to keep VGA games displayed in fullscreen, at 320x200 scaled to fit screen's height: however, I enable 4:3 aspect correction for SVGA.

Hope that helped! ^_-
