I keep getting this every time I try to launch the game (including Administrator Mode)

I saw that many people said you need to turn off second monitor, but I only have one monitor.

Running the game in VMware Workstation under Win XP works, but it has massive lag (drops to 5 FPS quite soon).

Any help would be appreciated - thanks ahead

The game support only 4:3 resolutions. If you have different aspect ratio the it will stretch the game to fill the entire screen. However as far as I know there is a limit how much the game can stretch itself. Try running it in windowed mode.

Don't think GOG Galaxy lets you run it in Windowed. Still, I set Fullscreen to 0 in the .ini file but I still get the same message

Try running it without the Galaxy client. Like Steam all of these clients easily mess up with the flow completelly changing the compatibility settings.
Apply the FOV and Widescreen patch.

If the problem persists, update your video card drivers.

If you plan on just playing Single Player, use dgVoodoo2.

That program guarantees the smoothest experience with no persisting issues (Minimap, alpha textures coming up etc). Here's the instruction on how to configure it. Can be launched with the applied FOV patch too, but will always desync you online.

Thanks for the helpful advice - dgVoodoo2 solved the issue. Will also use this with any other old games that don't work on my modern setup.
