Just really quick, I can't seem to get a minimap with terrain details. Just what seems to be a black circle with the locations of resources.

I could just be a moron and have neglected to find a button to turn on terrain details, but I can't seem to find anything of the sort.

For the record, I am using windows 8 (forcibly), and I don't know what problems this might be causing. The graphics are set to high, and I just can't seem to find any way to make the minimap more detailed than beyond showing water, rice, and horses.

I'm thinking about just reloading the game using the GOG installer, though I want to see if a re-install is necessary first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time in helping me resolve this matter.

First, be 100% sure you're using the most up-to-date video drivers (a 2014 driver fixed a lot of legacy software issues on Win 8).

After that, try starting a game. Once it shows your minimap, try minimizing the game (ALT-TAB to desktop) and then ALT-TAB back to it. (or hit Windows key if ALT-TAB doesn't work) Does this fix it?

(you many need to do this to ALT-TAB:

Press WindowsKey+R
type in
cmd
in the Command Prompt use the cd command to navigate to the game's directory, then enter
sdbinst -u game.sdb
to remove the compatibility settings and limitations.

)

(if it doesn't work, you may need to reinstall)

Officially, Windows 8 is not fully compatible with Battle Realms (see game page -- XP through 7). But lots of people have had luck with it. This age of game and Windows 8 tends to be a bit rough, though.

You can try rolling back Direct X, too. But I'm not sure if that will help you here.

That's all my ideas. Otherwise, contact support.

Happy to report that the alt-tab trick worked like a charm. Thank you kindly for your assistance!

Excellent! Glad it worked. If you mark my post as a "solution" in the forums, then this thread will show up in support so that others with the same problem can find the solution.

Happy playing!
Hi, while this works on my one rig. It doesn't work on another for some inexplicable reason. I tried your method but it just kept giving me error messages in command prompt (I'm not particularly good with command prompt in hindsight). Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: I don't get the black minimap, I just get a grey wall of nothing. I also suffer from some graphic bugs and framerate drops for no reason from time to time.

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-geforce-285-27-beta-drivers-released

if you scroll down, the patch notes say:

Resolved Single GPU Issues
Battle Realms: The mini-map is blank.
if you're not using the latest drivers for your card, i suggest upgrading them.
