I'm playing BG2 for the first time and everything seems so small to me. I have the wide screen mod and the picture fills up my whole screen but the characters and things just look really small. I played fallout 2 which has similar graphics and it was fine on my eyes. But everything just seems so small in this game. Is there something I've done wrong or is this something I'm just going to have to deal with? When I play the game I just wish I could zoom in.
Are you playing the classic or EE edition of BG2? And are you using any mods? Usually people use widescreen mod for classic (original) versions and they are satisfied with it.
With EE you can zoom in.

If you don't have EE choose a lower resolution in the widescreen mod or simply play without it (800x600 with black borders can be survived).

It's very bizarre. I have the wide screen mod. Fills up the whole screen but for some reason it's killing my eyes. I really don't know how to explain it. When I watch someone on youtube play it, it looks fine to me, but when I go to play it, it kills my eyes. If I play it without the wide screen mod, it looks fine, but i just wish i could make it bigger on my screen. The wide screen mod technically does that, but it's as if it makes it fill the screen without making anything larger if that makes any sense. Idk, maybe I'm crazy.

The original BG games are fixed asset (640x480) games, so any resolution you play in above that the game is effectively zoomed out. So, if you choose a resolution that fits your desktop when you use the widescreen mod, the game is zoomed out far too much for the fixed assets, making everything look tiny. The widescreen mod works by doing just this: zooming everything out. The best thing you can do for your eyes is to completely remove the widescreen mod and instead run BGConfig (from inside the installation folder) and enable unsupported modes. These include a reasonable 1024x768, about the very highest you ever want to go. You must also set your graphics driver (control panel) to perform scaling on GPU, otherwise the image will be stretched if you have a widescreen monitor. This results in black borders at either side, but there's no getting around that because, as I said, the games' assets are fixed (they don't scale).

Thanks for this. Everything makes sense now.
I figured it out. if I turn 3d acceleration off it makes the characters and everything bigger. What am I missing with the 3d acceleration off?

Bigger? Impossible. I suggest you are seeing an optical illusion of some kind.

What am I missing with the 3d acceleration off?
Mostly things like dust and smoke effects, spell effects etc. will be poorer quality.

haha. no seriously it does. If you get a ruler and measure the size of the characters on screen, they are bigger with the 3d acceleration turned off. idk y but they are. I can actually see the game well. I wish that wasn't the case though. I don't want to play with poorer quality.
The difference in quality between 3d acceleration on and off is minimal. I actually prefer having 3d acceleration off because having it on makes the text harder to read.

Makes everything harder to see for me. It adds black bars on the top and bottom of the screen making the screen smaller. I've been trying to figure out why all day. vuuhbguyuygbubyugjhgygug. I just need a windows 98 computer.

I play on an old WinXP laptop with a 4:3 screen. :)

Can we see screenshots of the 3d on and 3d off? I'm with Hickory. I don't believe it. So I really need to see it!

Also, I recommend not using the WS mod. Your saves are not compatible as soon as you change the resolution and it just makes the game look bad. I would recommend just running with black bars, stretched or EE.

http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=26298 this guy in this thread has sort of the same problem and he posts screen shots. Except unlike him I'm not using the wide screen mod.
And to everyone who looks at that thread and sees the two screen shots , even in he second one when the picture fills the screen, does that not look pretty small to you? It does to me. When I play with the 3d accelerator off, it's more zoomed in and the characters aren't as small.

This is happening because you didn't follow my advice: you *must* turn on GPU scaling in your video driver control panel.
