So I'm giving this thing another try, using Tutu this time. Anyway, I know about levels and equipment and stuff. What I'm specifically interested in is if e.g. a companion dying (and not being resurrected) in BG1 will mean that character doesn't appear in BG2?

TuTu doesn't do anyhting to BG2.
I you want continuity, either just ignore the companions that die in BG1, or use the Baldur's Gate Trilogy instead of TuTu.
Not only do I not care about continuity, I'm kind of relieved to know that I won't be botching things up down the road by leaving faceless, boring NPC#7 for dead in a dungeon somewhere. Thanks for the answer!
