Solaufein doesn't show up in quest Rescue Phaere. I have enhanced edition and I killed mindflayers before I entered drow city.
And have no mods.

I went to search for him and I found him near the entrance of the drow city and he said his mind is too preoccupied. Well, how to solve this?

Inside or outside the city?

Then the game hasn't updated to make him escape the area, which is what he is supposed to do when the matron gives you the quest. You can either go away to the other side of the city, or go outside and come back in and hope that the game updates, or you will have to load a previous save.
Are you talking about the right mind flayers?

Walkthrough:
------------

- GETTING ESTABLISHED IN THE CITY

We are here to do one thing and one thing only, get the Silver Dragon
eggs to give to Adalon. In order to do that we need to keep our ears to
the ground and search for information. Also we need to ally ourselves
with a Family. Once we are allied then the quests become available
(for instance, you can't "Free the Humans" until you have become allied).

Head over to the Male Fighter's Society (x 3535 y 1650). Here you will
meet up with Solaufein. He asks for your name, tell him that it doesn't
matter what your name is and he will be amused and like you more for it.
He tells you that you are going to be working for the Matron Mothers, and
to meet up with her handmaiden on a platform near the entrance. From
this point you have three days to get to that platform and meet with the
Handmaiden.

On your way back to the entrance, you will see a meeting between some
Mind Flayers (Ambassadors, no less) and Drow. This isn't particularly
important, but it is interesting. Go to the platform. (x 1550 y 3300)
Talk to Solaufein again. He explains that some "devourers" have taken
a priestess hostage. He asks if you know what those are:

Int 15+ - You can say "Illithid" and Solaufein likes you more
Int 9 to 14 - You can say "Mind Flayers" and nothing happens
Int 8 or less - You say "Otyugh" and Solaufein likes you less
"I don't know" - nothing happens

You are to rescue that Drow from the Illithid before they take her to
their city. You have three days.

- RESCUE PHAERE FROM THE ILLITHIDS

So, exit the city, and head south. I encountered an adventuring group,
that naturally assumed that I was evil. (x 3300 y 2225) One of these
goons has:

Dragons Breath, Halberd +4 (+1 ice, fire, elec., poison & acid dmg)

Continue south, then cross the bridge to find Solaufein (x 4715 y 3100).
He asks if you have any questions. If you apologize to him, he will like
you more. After which he tells you to get ready for battle. Cast all
your protective spells (Protection from Evil is very useful) and get
ready for combat with some Mind Flayers. You must fight 3 Mind Flayers
as well as 2 Umber Hulks. I would take out the Flayers first, one at a
time, then the Hulks. After the battle, Phaere (whom you just rescued)
sort of thanks you. (20,000 experience) Nothing you say to Phaere
matters. They both go back to the city. You have three days to go back
and talk with Solaufein again.

Battle Tip: Death Spell will annihilate your enemies here. Don't
assume it will always work on Mind Flayers, it won't. It
works here because these Mind Flayers are considered by
the game to be "summoned."

And when you ask a question try to provide more info, we can't guess where or when what happened

There is only one "Rescue Phaere" quest.

I just reloaded the game.

You reloaded from a previous save? Was everything alright after that?

She said "I killed mindflayers before I entered drow city", there is a whole mind flayer lair outside the city, how are we supposed to know which mind flayers she meant?

I don't care to give credit every time I post something from another source, I just don't find it important and I don't consider unethical not to.

I will say it again: there is only one "Rescue Phaere" quest. If you don't get that, then that's your problem. Killing the mind flayers in the lair is not part of the Rescue Phaere quest.

It is very important and totally unethical not to. So, you're a self-confessed plagiarist. Noted.

The OP is not clear, it just says "Solaufein doesn't show up in quest Rescue Phaere". But which point of the quest? Before getting the quest, in the middle of the quest, after the quest, you meet Solaufein several times during the quest and hte op doesn't say at which point of the quest she didn't find Solaufein and judging by her other posts and by the fact that she is a beginner to the game, she could be mistaken/confused. Maybe you guessed what she meant but my point stands that for 99% of people the op doesn't provide enough info to make it clear.

Don't be such an Englishman, I find it very unnethical of you to try to label me a plagiarist in an indirect trying to appear intelligent way by your own measures. I didn't confess anything because I didn't say it is my words I posted and since you are so smart, you should know that anybody can guess when someone is posting something that was found somewhere else, I even put the "walkthrough" title, 99% of logical people's first thought would be that this was obviously copied and pasted from a walkthrough. Secondly, who says that I have to give credit to someone that posted a walkthrough on the internet? I am free to mention any part of it and I don't have any obligation to the writer no matter what he says in his policy.

A bit offtopic, but most parts of knowledge we have come from somewhere else, do we really need to remember and give credit to everybody? Are we a book that needs bibliography in every post we make? And where do you put the limit? Two lines, two pages?

I consider it polite, when copying text from elsewhere, to at least link to the source. This gives the author some credit, and it also is useful for anyone who is interested in the rest of the walkthrough.

Anyway, the mind flayers you need to kill to complete the quest only appear during the quest. (If you encountered the adventuring party, which also only appears once this quest has started, you're on the right track.) Of interest is that this is one of the few (perhaps the only?) situation where mind flayers appear out in the open (usually, they appear in narrow corridors, so you can just have a mage tank them with Protection from Magic Weapons); however, if you know where they will spawn (or you think you know), you can set up some traps (or trap spells) before the fight actually starts.

Alternatively, if you'd rather skip the whole drow city plotline, just turn the silver dragon hostile; the game will then allow you to leave the underdark. (This is done to prevent the player from being unable to continue the game; in other words, to prevent a softlock.)

Random fact: If you somehow still have the version of Imoen with Imoen's Belt (this is only possible if you manage to glitch past the cutscene where she gets taken away, which is apparently not that easy to do) and are not playing the EE, a mindflayer's Intelligence drain can kill her without triggering the script that makes her leave the party; be aware that she will leave if you cast Raise Dead (but not Resurrection) on her, as the spell leaves her with 1 HP, triggering the script.

I thought that anybody interested would just google a phrase and find the walkthrough, I agree that it is nice to give credit but I find it time consuming, I want to give some help fast and the fastest way is to just copy-paste.
Yes, everything was fine after reload.
