Hi to all you BG luminaries over here,
Could a lowly peon ask for some help in regards to installing the BG Trilogy on a Mac? Or more specifically, ask for a problem that I’m encountering post install.
So just for some background, last year I attempted to install the BG Trilogy mod through Weidu, along with a few other mods such as the widescreen fix, unfinished business, etc… In fact, I was just following the guide written by GoJays2025 on this very forum, but doing so within a WINE wrapper. Unfortunately I ran into a snag (I don’t remember what anymore though) somewhere along the process that I just couldn’t resolve.
So since I’d rather spend the few hours of game-time that I can spare playing instead of trying to troubleshoot stuff I just called it quits, fired up Parallels and installed the whole thing in a virtualized Windows environment just fine. Game ran like a dream after modding, no snafus or anything and I was happy. Unfortunately life caught up and my game-time well ran pretty much dry after a few months and I left the game untouched for quite a long time.
Lately however i’ve been having a bit more time again, so I decided to pick up where I left off. However, starting up Parallels each time is quite annoying (that and I’m a lazy bum who wants to start his game with as little mouse-clicks as possible. ;) hahaha), so after stretching my google-fu a bit I found a post somewhere that described how the author would prepare a WINE jar, then install the game in a virtualized Windows environment and finally copy the installed game files into the prepared WINE jar.
So this gave me a bit of an epiphany, as after all I had a modded BGT installed and fully working in my own virtual pc. So this time instead of making my own WINE wrapper, I installed the GOG BGII version, deleted everything in the WINE jar’s drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur’s Gate 2 folder and copied the contents of the corresponding BGII folder on my virtual machine to there. Then I edited the data paths (under [ALIAS]) in the baldur.ini file, pointed the WINE runtime to the bgmain.exe and lo and behold I could start my BGT installation in MacOS. Everything seemed to work fine, my save games that I also copied over were accessible and playable, and I could start a new BG or BGII:SoA game.
However, there is one snafu that poses me a bit of a problem now and for which I cannot seem to find an immediate solution, and that is when I click the button to start a new ToB game. In my virtual pc BGT install this works without any issue, but when I do so in the WINE environment I get the message that the necessary CD cannot be found (despite the fact that I correctly edited the data paths under [ALIAS]).
So yeah, I just cannot understand why I would get this message in the WINE environment, but not in the virtualized Windows one? I mean, everything is exactly the same when it comes to the files being used. So has this something to do with a registry entry that I’m missing, or is there still something else than the data paths in the balder.ini that needs editing?
So if there’s anyone here who would have an idea what could be the cause of this problem, let me partake in your knowledge please. :)
Thanks in advance to all who read and/or reply!
