My game keeps crashing after I try to exit Candlekeep Caves in Chapter 6. The crash happens after I meet Diarmid and proceed to leave the caves.

Before this crash I had several happening during the Basilisk fight. Got to kill them and then the game crashed whenever I left the basilisk hall towards the Diarmid meeting passage [once, previously I had successfuly triggered the Diarmid encounter with a lone thief + invisibility potion, but since someone in the party died I had to revert to my ealier save state]. I uninstalled the Widescreen MOD and got in the passage without any problems.

Unfortunately now, I can't leave the cave at all - the game crashes with the following code:

An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Baldur\CVisibility.cpp at line number 1484

Any thoughts?

[I have the plain vanilla BG install from GOG + widecreen mod 3.05]

EDIT: re-installing the widescreen mod accomplishes nothing. Still crashes with the same error.

It is the widescreen mod at fault here (again!). Re-installing the mod (other than in the exact same order, and at the exact same screen resolution) as that found in your saved games will not help at all. I honestly don't understand why people think so highly of this mod, when it causes so many incompatibilities. Can it be overcome? Possibly: re-install the widescreen mod and at installation time select to convert your saved game -- MAKE BACKUPS!
I already did that and it didn't help...

So you uninstalled ALL of your mods, performed a clean restoration or install, and then re-installed (widescreen mod included) them in EXACTLY the same order as was in your saved games? If you didn't do all of that then you are banging your head up against the wall.
Then I am banging it hard because I didn't uninstall the game completely. Will do and get back here ASAP.
Uninstalling the game, widescreen MOD, and re-installing them didn't help. Basically the game crashes but doesn't give the same error has before. I can still see the new area loading screen but then it reverts to desktop and I have to close the executable with the Task Manager...

Don't know if there's something to be done about the save files to revert them to an usable state? They load ok enough though...

The widescreen mod has introduced fatal inconsistencies into your saved game. The only way of curing it is not recommended at all, since it involves removing the Candlekeep area from your saved game, but this will reset everything to game start default, and at chapter 6, this is not something that you want at all.

The only thing I can suggest is to try (it may not work) reverting to the default 800x600 resolution until you clear Candlekeep. Then again, other areas may have the same problem. This is one of the reasons (not the only, but one) I never use the widescreen mod, and never recommend it.
This same mod got me through Planescape: Torment unscathed a couple of years ago. I never imagined it would add to the already buggy nature of Baldur's Gate. It's funny because I got re-interested when a friend told me wonders of the Enhanced edition. Since I own both Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and expansions in the original big box format I went it and bought them again just for the sake of easy installation (and of course I sympathize with the whole GOG concept!) - I figured that the enhanced edition wouldn't update the game enough for me to justify the price tag. A pity this would happen. I'm not throwing in the towel just yet, so I'll keep you posted on news.
I can and did alter the save game to get to the next area SW Candlekeep but of course I cannot trigger the beginning of Chapter 7 which to my knowledge happens when you leave the Candlekeep Caves... Any thoughts? Curiously I can enter Candlekeep normally because the keeper behaves exactly the same way as it did when I returned the first time...

Try going back to the Candlekeep caves and re-emerging. Select all of your group, open the console and type:

CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("AR5506")

This will move you back into the caves.
Nah - didn't help - still crashes when leaving... But it was a good call! If someone had a working save I could just tweak it with the save game editor to mirror my actual one and I'd be good...

If I open the console and do CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("AR2626") after moving in the cave (to Candlekeep), the game still crashes...

Check the global variable 'TETH'. If it is set to 3, completely remove area 2626 from your save game to prevent crashing (you won't need to go back there again once this is sorted), then go back there and set that variable to 2 -- this appears to be what triggers chapter 7 in area 2626 script.

CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("AR2626")
CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("Teth","GLOBAL","2")

That variable being set to 2 results in:

IncrementChapter("Chptxt7")
AddJournalEntry(15841)
SetGlobal("Teth","GLOBAL",3)
How do I remove 2626 from the save game? Do I need an hex editor?

No, you need [url=http://www.idi.ntnu.no/~joh/ni/]Near Infinity[/url]. It requires Java to be installed. Place the .jar file inside your BG installation, and run it. Open the 'Save' tree and select the 'BALDUR.SAV' from the save game -- BACK UP YOUR SAVED GAMES FIRST!

When you have selected baldur.sav, press 'Decompress', then select AR2626.ARE and press 'Delete file'. Now (VERY important), press 'Compress'. Click off BALDUR.SAV (choose anything else) and it will prompt you to save. Do so.

It worked beautifully - I of course was laid in the northwest part of 2626, so I had to reveal the map and use the Hans() to move to the entry point - but it WORKED. Got to Baldur's Gate and had the Harper Agent talk then Tamoko - however if I try to enter Sorcerous Sundries the game crashes - do you think I can use the same method for deleting the area the re-entering it?

EDIT: It seems I can, yes - and it works fine afterwards! :))

EDIT 2: And it happens again in Elfsong Tavern too and probably in many others. Can I just go ahead and delete every location, except the one I'm on and things will work fine afterwards? Either that or I can simply to the delete location and re-enter it one by one which IS working.
