Hi.

I have a fresh install of Win7 Pro SP1 in a VMWare 4 VM (my system is a Mac Pro 6-core 3.33GHz with 10GB RAM and a Radeon 5770 GPU). I gave the Windows 7 virtual machine 2 cores & 4GB of memory.

I've bought the D&D pack offer but only installed BG1 so far. I thought I'd play that with minimal mods/fixes before doing anything else. So I started following the conservative guide here:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/baldur_s_gate/a_conservative_modders_gui

I set the Windows 7 resolution to 1280x800. I have the "disable visual themes" and "disable desktop composition" compatibility open checked in the properties for the BG1 desktop icon.

Then I downloaded & ran the Widescreen fix:

http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/

I picked infinity engine, 1280x800, no to saved games and no to multiple resolutions. It reported that it installed fine.

The first couple of times I tried to run the game the graphics looked a bit odd (green tinges on the intro movies and then garbled menus). The last time I didn't suffer those problems however the general interface is very... sluggish feeling both moving the cursor and pressing buttons. Every time I press any button it takes effect immediate, however there is a pause of about a second before I can do anything else.

These problems are enough that I feel like it's going to make playing the game something of a chore.

Also I am getting graphical glitches, for example the hand cursor leaving a flashing trail on various parts of the screen.

It's hard to describe so I've uploaded a short screencast here:

I'm wondering if this is related to only installing the widescreen mod & not the GUI fix mod as well?

Or something to do with Windows 7?

This is the fastest Mac you can buy right now and VMWare Fusion is rated to play the latest 3D games at decent frame rates so I am assuming it should cope with a classic from 1998 :)

I'm really very keen to play this game as it was way beyond the machine I could afford back in the day.

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks.

Matt

Bah!

All that and then I see something about BG not liking 3D accelerated hardware. I turned off 3D acceleration for the VM and now the problems with the glitches and pause after clicking buttons are gone.

On the other hand, this is a good thing :)

Hi!

Are all the problems solved now? If so, please mark as solved. Have fun with BG!

Hi Jasper.

Yes I think so. Can you tell me how I mark the problem as solved?

Thanks.

Found it. I think the "mark as solved" might be better not to be a hidden fly-over but I guess once you know it's not a problem.

Thanks again.
