Apologies if this is addressed elsewhere-

I just finished the first Baldur's Gate, but when I go to "import save file" in 2 the game isn't finding any saves. What do I need to do to bring my character over from the first game (and have the game recognize my tome-increased stats and carry-over items)?

You need to copy your final save from your BG1 save folder to your save folder in BG2 & then you'll be right.
First of all, you cannot have any carry-over items in BG2. All items are stripped from you at the start of the game. However, if your character is carrying certain items (see below), they can be found in various places in Irenicus's Dungeon.

As for your save file or character files, copy your final save from your BG1 saves folder into your BG2 saves folder. Or any exported character from your BG1 character folder to you BG2 character folder.

Items that will import into BG2
(Only 2 items can be imported, one from each list, in order of priority). If no items are on your imported character, you will get the item marked ***

List 1 (Armour)
--------------------
Leather Armour +2 "Protector of the Second"
Chain Mail +2 "Mail of the Dead" ***
Plate Mail +1 "Fallorain's Plate"
Chainmail +3

List 2 (Misc)
----------------
Helm of Balduran ***
Claw of Kazgaroth
Horn of Kazgaroth
Koveras' Ring of Protection "Ring of the Princes"

Edit: Oh, and I forgot about the Golden Pantaloons. If your character is carrying them, those will be found in addition to anything above, too.

I finished baldur´s gate 1. I want to import my caracter to BG2. But somehow, the caracter doesnt appear in the caracter folder (although inside BG1 i can import it for a new BG1 game, with all the stuff that the caracter had when i beat the game).

Also the saves dont appear in the BG1 directory. The save folder only shows "88888 - mission pack save" folder, and inside of it, only unmodified files (modification date: 1999). When i copy the save folder to BG2, it only imports some caracter that i never created before.

How can i import my caracter to BG2???

Do you have your game installed to 'Program Files'? If so, then your saves will be in a virtual store. Best practice is to never install games inside of the Windows protected Program Files folder structure. If you have, your best bet is to uninstall and re-install to somewhere like C:\Games\Baldur's Gate\.

Other than that, make sure you are looking in and copying the correct saves. If you play single player, don't look inside the MPSave folder. It's just called 'Save'.

When you view your save folder in BG1, there will be a "Compatibility Files" tab at the top of the page, clicking on that will take you to a Virtual Store with your saved games.

Thanks. Now i can import my caracter from BG1 to BG2.
Thanks all for the help! I actually didn't have a Saves folder for some reason after BGII installed, but I resolved the issue by creating one myself.

Not sure what my issue is.....I have taken all the information from my final save in BG I, created a save file in BGII, and placed it in it, but I still have no character information to import. Any Ideas?

Just copy your whole final saved game folder to the BG2 save folder.
Then in BG2 import saved game , Final Save.

Thanks! That did the trick. Do you know why my character stats would have changed? The abilities and experience points are the same, but I went from level 8 to 6, and my hit points fell from 110 to 84.

I don't know why & importing into BG2 has always been a bit buggy.

If you are on normal or easy mode, try setting core rules before importing you character.
Or try finishing your imported character as normal & instead of hitting accept, hit cancel & redo it.
You might find you get your HP back on the 2nd go.

Was your Character from an unmodded BG1 game?

You can always use Shadowkeeper & reset them.

Before you get too far into BG2, you might want to look at upgrading your entire experience to BGT.

Have fun.

What would be the point if he has already finished BG1?

1. New content.
2. Better playing experience, better graphics, better resolution, better.
3. Smooth transition from 1 - 2.
All in all, worth the time and effort. If he winds up not wanting to play through 1 again, he can recreate his characters in a fresh start of 2 with shadowkeeper and will still have all the tweaks and perks of BGT available to him that he wouldn't have if he didn't upgrade to BGT or spend the time modding out 2.
In other words, BGT is worth it even if you only play it for BG2+.
