Hi, i just wonder how strong does your character have to be to defeat the soldier on the bridge? So far he wipes my party of the bridge which is sad. My party is still in the level 5-6 range.

You should be good enough. Try some different tactics, spells and/or disposables.

If you still can't do it, try after another level. I did the whole thing at level 7, but it was a lot of save/loads.

P.S. At 5 or 6, you should be able to get a level or two or three cleared out, but you'd have to be pretty good to clear the whole thing.

Keep in mind that TotSC came out after the main game, and Durlag's Tower is the hardest content of the expansion, at least the lower levels. Basically, your characters are supposed to be near the level cap before tackling it.

With good tactics, good gear and a good group, it's of course possible to beat it earlier, but quite frankly Durlag's Tower is already pretty hard for capped characters, and if you're only level 5/6, you certainly have lots of easier stuff to do.

I have to admit that i screwed up with the party creation.
My party consist off my main character (Elf, Fighter, Chaotic Neutral)
Jaheira, Khalid (which seems to get killed quiet often), Ajantis, Imoen and Dynaheir.
So this is not the greatest party but it prevails quiet good.
I tried some spells but none had any effect on these fighters. I think i have to revisit it at a later time once i level up some more or at least one level.

You have my party, but no Ajantis. I played a mage and I had Minsc. To be honest, I have to have Minsc. I think I'm as attached to Boo as he is.

It never hurts to go back to it. There's plenty of XP to be had in other locations. And gear, too.
@ mystral Oh my, i did not realize that this is from the expansion. See, its a long time that i played this game and at that time i never finished the game.
That is good to know since i can revisit the location at a later time.

@ Tallima I think i lost Minsc at an early stage since i took my time and he got hostile. Since then i could get him back to join again. Even though it said somewhere that you can make them rejoin if you are a higher level. I did got her to join me and even though we were bumping a couple of time into Minsc he never joined.
I am not sure if it was a mistake at the beginning to put a lot of points in dex (i am just so used to) but i read that dex is not that helpful in the game.
Anyway, i will try to advance as much as i can. I will revisit some locations before i return to cloakwood to defeat the spider queen.

Both Durlag's Tower and the werewolf island are part of the expansion. The werewolf island isn't that hard, provided you have the weapons needed to hurt greater wolfweres, and 2 of those are given on the island.
Durlag's Tower OTOH is the hardest part of the game.

As for Minsc, he'll go hostile if you don't go to the Gnoll Fortress to rescue Dynaheir quickly. Then there's no way to get him back.

In BG having as high a dex as possible (provided it's higher than 15) is actually very important, because it'll make your AC better and it'll help on your attack rolls with bows, and bows are often the best weapon to use early on, since they get an extra attack per round.

If you want to play an elven pure fighter, ideal starting stats are 18/00 strength, 19 dex, 17 con and 8 or higher for every other stat, since they don't matter.
Except for charisma, you can push that to 18 if you have the points for better prices in shops and quest rewards, but if you don't have the points, just use Imoen as leader whenever talking to NPCs, her 16 charisma is good enough.

Just to give you my stats for my elf fighter.
STR 18/55
DEX 19
CON 11
INT 8
WIS 4
CHA 16
My character can carry around much more than any other character in my party and is the strongest so far.

First of all -- and I know it's too late now -- an Elf does not make an optimal fighter, because of a penalty to CON, but they excel at ranged combat with their 19 DEX and an innate +1 THAC0 bonus to bows and swords, so a Ranger (Archer or Stalker particularly) is an ideal class for Elves. Oddly enough, Elves make great Fighter/Mages, too.

CON in warrior classes is important for Hit Points at level up, as they need to be able to get in close and survive. With your fighter having only 11 CON, he is missing out on 3 HP at every level up -- it would be 4 for Humans, and 5 for Dwarves, who's maximum CON is 18 and 19 (Elf is 17) -- and that will really hurt in the early game.
Durlag's Tower was actually the hardest part of the game for me when I went through. I played using the BGT Mod and used a Cavalier as my main. I forget what my level was when I went through though I think it was around 7 - 8. I waited to do Durlag's until the point right before you go back to Candlekeep as it seemed the most appropriate from a story point of view as after that you are pretty much rushed to the first games conclusion.
I didn't have much trouble going through BG1 but the last levels of Durlags Tower made me search all my stash chests for potions and scrolls and stuff :D The difficulty really ramps up.
From your description of your PC and his team, it occurs to me that "the soldier on the bridge" (which is actually a battle horror) should not prove to be too difficult for you.

Try hammering it with Magic Missiles and Fireballs and hack it to death. It is highly resistant to missile damage if my memory does not fail me. BTW with a party of level of 5-6, you should be able to clear the top levels of Durlag's Tower, and the FIRST underground level, but further levels may be too difficult to breakthrough. I'd also suggest you bring as many defense potions as possible and DO bring some summoning wands.

A golden rule: If the bosses for the first underground level are too tough for your team, even when well-prepared, then get out, gain more levels and come back at 7-8.

I am still not there. But i learn the value of summoning creatures.. this helped me a lot. Pretty much anywhere actually. Right now i am in the expansion but not there so far.
My party leveled up unevenly and so i have 8,7 and 6 characters in my party. But i am hopeful :)

Different classes level up at slightly different rates, so that's normal. Don't worry about it.
The battle horrors? they can be sort of tough but really all you need to do is shoot spells in their face while the front-liners hit them. I'm assuming you have magic weapons for all of your party members by this point, and have at least one mage who can fling spells at enemies.

The battle horrors are merely the first step to an even more brutal area in the game, however. and Durlag's Tower is hard, but the optional boss afterwards is the hardest enemy in the entire game.
