I tried posting this questing in the guide for installing mods but for some reason my post didn't show up there. Don't know if it needs approval before showing up there or not(new to this site so not sure how everything works), but I figured I'd try to post my question in a separate post to see if that works.

Ok so I just downloaded BG and BGII and installed all the mods in the guide. It seems that with BGT it automatically reveals city maps. Is there any way to disable this? When I played this game years ago I remember gradually revealing maps as I explored, and I really would prefer it to be this way so I can make sure I explore an area thoroughly.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Kythe

No that's how it is with BGT.
If you use TuTu for BG1 then reveal city maps is an option in BG2tweaks, and not the default.
That's really a shame. Whoever developed BGT shouldn't have just assumed everyone would want to play that way and made it optional.

I'd think that there'd be some sort of additional mod I could install that would hide the maps for people who feel the same way I do. If anyone knows of one please let me know.

I'm not sure if I want to reinstall everything with tutu instead because a big reason that I chose BGT over tutu was because I really liked the idea of the first game flowing seamlessly into the second one. I guess if no one knows of any other mods to hide the maps I'll have to decide which feature is more important to me.
Hmm...I could swear TuTu also reveals entire city maps.
I can't remember how vanilla BG1 was.
Well if it does then I have no reason to consider using Tutu instead of BGT. Though I was under the impression that it only did that if you chose that option when installing the tweak pack.

I'd really just prefer all maps in both games to be blacked out and gradually revealed as I explore. It creates more a sense of adventure and it also makes it less likely that I'll miss things.

I was playing Planescape Torment recently and that's something that really bugged me, that the city maps were fully revealed and actually made exploration harder for me. Though I have no idea if that's what that game was like originally or if it was something put in place by all the mods I installed(I've never played that game before without the mods).
Just checked, my version of Tutu doesn't reveal city maps by default. Not sure what version I'm using but it's a fairly recent one.

From what I remember, both PST and BG2 default behavior is to have the city maps already revealed. BG1 original does not do this I think, but playing it with BG2 conversion mods obviously adds the feature. And you have no choice for BG2 either way.

The revealing isn't an automatic thing, actually, it's the area script executing an Explore command the first time you enter the area. The main Athkatla maps in BG2 (and a few others, like the conquered Keep or cleansed Temple) all have that code, but the Baldur's Gate city maps don't.

If a BGT or Tutu install is revealing the city maps automatically, it's because the area scripts have been modified. My Tutu install doesn't have those lines in the area scripts, so my guess is it's a BGT thing. If you want to remove that behavior, you can search for a mod, or you can do it yourself with Near Infinity. Open up the .ARE file in question, open up the area script that's linked there, and look for something like this:

IF
OnCreation()
Global("something maybe","ARxxxx",0)
THEN
RESPONSE #100
SetGlobal("something maybe","ARxxxx",1)
Explore()
Continue()
END

That's how the BG2 area-reveal code is formatted, so presumably the BGT code would be similar. Just comment out that section by adding two slashes ( // ) in front of all those lines. That will prevent future areas from revealing themselves, but it won't un-reveal anything for areas already entered.

The other reason you might consider TuTu over BGT, is you can use BG2tweaks to put the BG1 weapon proficiency system back. It's better suited to the game.
Thanks for the info and the suggestions. I'm not a programmer and don't feel comfortable messing with the code myself though. I have tried looking for a mod that does what I want, but came up empty after a few hours of searching. If anyone does come across a mod for this, I'd love to hear about it.

I guess I might as well get used to playing this way in BG1 if I don't really have a choice in BG2 anyway. Perhaps I can use the map notes to mark sections I've already explored.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, there was a website error that was causing my posts not to show up.
I'd never considered the possibility that someone would want the inverse tweak. Something like this should be easy enough to code up for Tweaks v12.
And after looking into this, I'd suggest you check your weidu.log for what you've installed. BGT does not reveal maps by default; it's a component of BGT Tweaks.

I haven't used BGT for a couple of years, but if that is the case, you need to edit your BG2tweaks Readme.
"Reveal City Maps
Tutu Only
In Baldur's Gate II, city maps were revealed as soon as you entered the area. This component will reveal the maps of Baldur's Gate, Nashkel, Beregost, Candlekeep, and (if Tales of the Sword Coast is installed) Ulgoth's Beard. This tweak is not available for Baldur's Gate Trilogy as it contains this functionality by default."

Yeah I do remember seeing that when installing it. Though when I originally posted this message I was just starting the game and saw that Candlekeep was fully revealed, which it definitely wasn't in the original version. However, as I continued playing I found that neither Nashkel or Beregost was fully revealed so I got to explore those areas as I normally prefer to do. Also when I tried to go back to Candlekeep it looked like it was blacked out at that point, though I didn't stay there very long as I didn't have the item required to get back in. I'm not sure about the other cities listed as I haven't visited them yet, but so far I've been able to explore all areas the way I prefer to do except for Candlekeep when I first started the game.
Well sorry for the bum steer, It's been a long time since I played with BGT & I was only going by the readme.
Glad it worked out the way you wanted.
While TuTu keeps Candlekeep blacked out as original, maybe when doing bg2tweaks they decided it would be odd for you to have to "explore" Candlekeep when you had lived there your whole life.
