gday i just installed big world but its big an takes awhile mind u i'm on my kick around laptop an old ibm thinkpad r40e running xp

This is for the GoG Versions of BG-TotSC, BG2-SoA-ToB

Best advice with this start it before bed then check and continue before work/school/back
to bed as it install times are different it can take from 1 hour to a day

BG - installed x:\BI\Baldurs Gate
V1.3.5521 (gog version)

saved game made normal and quick

BG2 - installed x:\BI\BGII - SoA
V2.5.26498 (gog version) DO NOT UPDATE as this will make u need a cd
GoG is running the the patch u just need to make a txt doc and it works

I've had to make a file x:\BI\BGII - SoA\CD5\movies
Then copy 25movies.bif from x:\BI\BGII - SoA\data\Movies to the new file
Make BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt in x:\BI\BGII - SoA (it doesn't need any txt in the file it's only
for verification) thanx SamuraiJackJr
saved games made normal and quick Both SoA and ToB

big world: recommanded and install.bat: standard

now run BGMain.exe from your x:\BI\BGII SoA - ToB dir and bobs your aunty

well 9 1/2 hours (i'm on a slow laptop so remember that faster machines
will do this faster) and its all good work with no need for cd's or what not
well worth the time.

I'm on Windows 7 (64 bit).

Is it really necesary to install outside C:\Program Files (x86) ?
Guess I'll give it a shot unless someone tells me they've tried :p

A bit of useful info:

Windows Vista and 7 use UAC and DEP. What this means is that programs which are installed into Program Files folders (inludind x86 on 64-bit systems) are protected. This is a security feature and what it does is prevent the installed files from being altered after the install is complete. Now, for applications this isn't so much of an issue, but for games it can be as many older games will want to create and edit save games and settings files within the game's installation folder, which UAC and DEP are preventing you from doing. Newer games and applications get around this by saving to the User folder.

So, to answer your question, I heavily recommend installing games outside of the Program Files folder (I use C:\Games\...) as it will prevent UAC and DEP being an issue due to installation location.
Just thought Iød let people know how it went...

I am on Windows 7. Installing to Program Files is fine - although you'll need to disable UAC while running the Big World installer (you can enable it again afterwards).
Just one thing - the BG2 directory MUST be called "BGII - SoA" (mine is "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\BGII - SoA").
Also, at some point the installer will complain about a missing patch. Add a new file to the BG2 directory called "BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt" (just an empty text file). The patch is preinstalled, but the installer checks for the readme created when you install it manually.

And so you know it is worth it :) (boring picture, I know).
Thanks for the tips! I just went through the whole Big World install process after getting BG from GoG and had zero luck...because of those couple small inconsistencies. Gonna try it this way now.

Somewhere in here while following your guide I did something that won't let me start ToB without a disc. I tried to make a save on it, but have one from before I edited the 25movies.bif file location and added the .txt file. Should I undo what I have done and try working it, or do you think Big World would fix it anyway?
"Wrong disc in drive J:, place expansion CD in drive J:"

EDIT: Figured out the problem. I moved the 25movies.bif file instead of copying it into CD5\movies
i just copied the file and put it in the old data\movies folder and everything is coming up millhouse. thanks for the guide by the way, it's a life saver!

I can confirm after various installations BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt does not work and in the Installation process you are required to patch - if you patch it means you need to use the CD, as being a GoG version you cannot do this and you cannot get any further in the TBW Installation.

So back to square one again. Done 8 installations attempts, does not work.

Please do various installs and attempts before commenting and giving a guide for the masses to follow on here.

Cheers.

I can confirm that this method does work after 1 try. The file name has to be exactly "BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt". So make sure, your file extensions are shown, not that the actual name is "BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt.txt"
G'day hardcore
What OS r u running? And did u follow every step and every file not just glossed over it.
We need all the info u can give so we can help

I have hit a snag while trying to install Big Wolrd. It seems the file WeiDU-Windows-229 is no longer available for download from it's original site. The download link from WeiDU.org no longer works. I have not been able to find this file anywhere else and it is critical for completing the installation. Does anyone know where I can get this file?

That's odd, I just installed BiG yesternight, using BiG World Setup v9.10. I chose the standard installation, and everything went fine (after actually switching UAC, antivirus and firewall off, and after fixing one script that might be broken).

Which installer are you using, where did you download it, and which settings did you choose?

Edit: Also, note that much of the information in the OP is outdated by now, the newer BiG World Setup doesn't require the user to create or move files, it now recognizes a GoG installation and is able to deal with that.

Heya,

This bug is actually pretty new since weiDU 230 just came out and the old 229 link on the website is dead. You can use this new link to download the latest version of weiDU and drop the weiDU folder in your BG2 folder:

http://www.weidu.org/~thebigg/WeiDU-Windows-230.zip

Enjoy.
