I'm running OSX10.10.5 on a dual quad-core 2.26GHz with 24GB RAM and an old ATI 4870 512MB card. Every time I go to boot the game I get this dialogue box

"The Wine configuration in /Applications/Baldur's Gate The Original Saga.app/Contents/Resources/game/Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Resources is being updated, please wait..."

Which runs for about 2 minutes and then everything just seems to quit without any crash report or anything. Does anyone have any ideas to go about troubleshooting this. I'm not very familiar with Wine (although I know that it's an emulator) and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What's the EE? Basically, I've just opened the .dmg from the download, copied the Baldurs Gate .app from there to my apps folder, and run that .app file.... is that the same as what you're referring to? I've downloaded and used other GOG games before, but I've never had issues with them. Sorry if I'm needing some handholding here.

I've also open the package and drilled down to find the GOG Launcher unix executable, and when I run it in the terminal, I'm getting what's in the text below. I've also tried, batchmoding the base app (includign all sub files and folders) to allow -W (along with read as well).....

i'm having the same problem. that's why i'm cruising these forums. ;)

but i'm only having this problem with the updated installer. i think it is version 2.0.0.5. i dug up an older installer from right after i bought the game and it is version 1.something. i think maybe 1.0.0.5. and the version in the old installer works. or at least i can get it to launch.

using the old (but working) version when i drill down inside the package contents to get to the launcher mine is called WineskinLauncher where yours is called GOGLauncher. and the only output i get from running it in terminal is:

/Users/derekpennycuff/Applications/Baldurs\ Gate\ 1.app/Contents/MacOS/WineskinLauncher ; exit;
logout

then the game launches as expected. but i assume the updated version includes some bug fixes or something otherwise why release an update? so i'd rather play the updated version if i can get it working.

i've read through all the support guides found here: www.gog .com/support/baldurs_gate_the_original_saga/bgeneral_troubleshooting_guide_mac_os_x_gamesb

and i've tried all the suggestions that apply to my particular version of mac OS (which is 10.10.5 for what it's worth). even going so far as to create a new user account. so far nothing has worked. i tried using the "get info" panel on the app package to make sure my account had read and write access, then i used the "apply to enclosed items" to make sure i had read and write all the way down. but maybe the user the launcher runs under is not my personal account?

now i'm gonna check my working but older version against the error messages your terminal reported.

/Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Frameworks/libXplugin.1.0.dylib
this file exists and is an alias to /usr/lib/libXplugin.1.dylib

/Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Frameworks/libXplugin.1.dylib
same deal, exists as an alias to /usr/lib/[same file name]

/Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Frameworks/libXplugin.dylib
ditto

/Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Resources/dosdevices/d::
inside my dosdevices directory i've got aliases for c/ and z/.
c/ points to /Baldurs Gate 1.app/Contents/Resources/drive_c
z/ points to my home directory
then i have d// which seems to be a self referential alias, replacing the / characters with : characters.
then i have e through j in both single / and double / versions. i do not have a k alias at all.

since all the files triggering the errors are aliases my gut tells me they point to the wrong files. or in the case of the libXplugin stuff don't seem to exist at all. and i'm not sure if those files exist within the package from the DMG file or if they are generated by wine on the first launch of the app. one of the suggested trouble shooting steps was to see if the app would launch from within the mounted DMG, without dragging it to applications. when i tried that i got an error about not being able to run from a read only partition.

whatever problems exist in the version i downloaded over the weekend do not exist in the version i downloaded immediately after purchasing the D&D classics bundle quite some time back.

i've got both a mac book pro and an older imac. and i've got both versions of the installer DMGs. i'll try to do some side by side comparisons using all 4 combinations and report back what i find here.

in the mean time mac users may be better off shelling out the extra cash for the enhanced edition. and it was _just_ on sale too. ugh.
ok, came home and tried the same thing on the imac, also running mac OS 10.10.5. and i got the same results. the version from baldurs_gate_1.0.0.5.dmg launched fine. the version from baldurs_gate_the_original_saga_2.0.0.5.dmg throws the same errors seen in glcostakis's post from yesterday.

then i went spelunking through both packages. and by moving stuff around i was able to get rid of the libXplugin related missing file errors. those file DO exist by the way, they just seem to be a self referential alias? in any case, replacing them with the aliases from the old installer got rid of those errors. but all the dosdevices directory permissions stuff is still there. even after replacing those with their counterpart from the working installation.

i don't know enough about aliases and permissions and wine wrappers to go much further than this. but i did notice the changelog for the 2.0.0.5 version mentions changes to work around the "system integrity protection" introduced in el capitan (10.11, newer than the version i'm currently running).

oh, and i think in my post from this morning (around 12 hours ago, that may be yesterday for you depending on your time zone) i missed the fact that the dosdevices lines were looking inside the Baldurs Gate 1.app package which is itself inside the Baldur's Gate The Original Saga.app package. the files i thought were totally missing were in fact there. i was looking in the wrong place. but the aliases point to the wrong places. apparently.
I'm experiencing the same problem in OSX 10.11 :/

From "Applications > Baldur's Gate The Original Saga > Contents > Resources > game > Baldurs Gate 1" I've opened Wineskin and did a "Test Run". The same message box about updating Wine configs showed up and disappeared after some seconds. But then it prompted an option to see the Test Run logs. Here they are:

I have no problems starting the current version on 10.11, but on another machine running 10.10 the game wouldn't even start. Updating the engine to 1.7.55 solved this issue for me.

Another problem was that I couldn't install several mods via wineskin. Using wine on the command line worked, though.
Thanks knicke!

I've got some replies from Genoan, GOG support, and managed to get it running here as well. As knicke said, updating the engine to 1.7.55 solved the issue here too :)

I'm pasting the replies I've got from the support team here for information:

1st Iteration:

"Please open the Applications folder, open the Terminal.app type in:
sudo open
that is "sudo open " without the quotes, make sure that there is a space after the command and before the path.
Do not press Enter, drag the game's app from the Applications folder to the terminal, this should add the correct path, press Enter now, you should receive a prompt to enter your password.
Please let me know if this helps.

Please go to Applications, right click game's App and select Show Package Contents, open Wineskin.app , click Advanced > Test Run.
If the Wineskin.app is not there go to Contents > Resources > game, right-click the game's app select Show Package Contents, open Wineskin.app , click Advanced > Test Run
Now open the Resources > Logs directory closest to the Wineskin.app and send me the contents of the Logs folder (add them to a zip archive if the file size is too big)."

2nd iteration (the one that really solved for my case):

"This issue might be caused by your graphics devices not switching correctly. Please download the gfxCardStatus utility from gfx.io
In gfxCardStatus set to use only one graphics device and try the game again. If this fails, please select the other graphics device and try launching again.

Please try changing the version of Wine. To do this you will need to install Wineskin Winery from wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads
Start the application and use it to download additional versions of Wine (by clicking +).
Now you should be able to right click the game's app, select Show Package Contents and run Wineskin.app.
If the Wineskin.app is not there go to Contents > Resources > game, right-click the game's app select Show Package Contents and open Wineskin.app.
In the Advanced options change the engine to the one you have downloaded."

I did this as he said:
- Downloaded Wineskin Winery and ran it;
- Clicked "+" and picked WS9Wine 1.7.55 to download;
- Clicked "Update wrapper" on it;
- Went to Wineskin (in Baldur's Gate app) and clicked test run;

It's now working :) Hope this info can help anyone

Thanks for the info. I had the same problem with Baldur's Gate the Original Saga. What I don't understand is, why don't GoG just fix the problem in the download????

You're welcome, Ninjutsu! Glad this was helpful :)

+1 for updating the default version of Wine / Wrapper from the installer

I'm not sure if it could crash / interfer with running it on other OSX versions, but from looking at this thread seems it would save users some trouble
